“Smile… and carry on.” — Liang of Red Red Botak Head It’s simple advice, but it’s been my mantra for 11 years in the wild world of F&B. Some people think I’m reckless for opening restaurants with no visibility or frontage—considered key to success back in the day. They say it’s business suicide. I just smile and carry on, knowing I’ve prepared well and am willing to make the sacrifices needed to thrive. A recent example: on January 8th, I got word the main entrance to my restaurant, Red Red Botak Head, would be closed. With the place already tucked away on a rooftop, this felt like a death sentence. I argued and reasoned that an inaccessible restaurant was certain death, but it didn’t change anything. Within 48 hours, only a minor entrance remained. I smiled, and carried on. I doubled down. We boosted our marketing, created quirky content, and catered to customers in unique ways—all with a wide smile. By mid-August, we matched last year’s revenue and are on track to close the year on a high. Challenges are part of the journey. What matters is how we face them. Some rage and complain in the face of whichever deity they choose to. I just smile. Because honestly, I love a good challenge and I’m a sucker for pain… a story for another day 😉 ——— Liang, Founder and head chef of Red Red Botak Head. Artist and radio DJ turned chef and F&B owner. ——— F&B series. Question: “What’s the single most impactful decision or focus that’s driven your business success to this day?” #EntrepreneurMindset #FandBIndustry #GrowthMindset #Resilience #PassionForFood #BusinessLessons #Leadership #StayPositive

When you consider the marquee success stories in the restaurant industry today, there is one brand synonymous with true hypergrowth: Dave's Hot Chicken There isn’t just one winning formula for success; however, with 100% sales growth in 2023, 200+ current locations, and a thousand – yes a thousand – more in the pipeline, the Dave’s team seems to have a great one. It’s even more mind-blowing when you consider this all started with three friends and a couple of fryers popping up in an East Hollywood parking lot in 2017 (see photo). This is the type of brand that Olo loves working with. In 2020, when Dave’s was just shy of 80 locations, they faced a broad range of tech stack solutions to choose from. Their ambitious goals drove them towards Olo as a partner to grow with them as they quickly scale. This is our playbook for emerging enterprises: serve their needs today and scale with them as they grow. As emerging enterprise brands tend to be more greenfield opportunities, our success is based on their success. A true win-win. And they’re just getting started. Congrats on your incredible growth Dave’s Hot Chicken. We can’t wait to see what’s next for you, and Olo will be here to support you every step of the way. Happy Saturday! Please checkout this week's edition of Branded Hospitality Ventures' Hospitality Headline Newsletter Newsletter - "Dance Mode" The link is in the comment section. There was a great deal of debate this week about "Founder Mode" vs "Manager Mode." The Top of the Fold digs into that a little bit, but for the hospitality industry and the many roles we're all required to play and the need to be agile and change quickly, I think "Dance Mode" is a more accurate description. This week's Shoutout goes to our partners at Big Chicken and specifically its All-Star Tech Team they're leveraging to keep up with their fast pace of growth and their commitment to surprising & delighting guests! We have an article from Branded's restaurant evangelist, 🍔🍟🍕🎙 David "Rev" Ciancio on his biggest takeaways from #FSTEC2024. And of course, our B-List, which, as always, is created by the "Machine" and its algorithms that continue to highlight the good people that are making things happen in this industry we love. Comments, feedback and suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. It takes a village! My Top 3 Takeaways from last week at QSR... While there was a lot to learn and many great panelists these were my top 3... 1. Culture that Grows - As companies scale it is hard to keep the culture as you bring in different personalities and with restaurants you're not always in the same place. The panel provided some great insight and best practices. HospiVation | Jason E Brooks, Kelly Costanza, Michael Freeman, Scott Greenberg, Michael Keller, Scott Snyder and Jeremy Theisen 2. Secrets of the Tech Stack - This was a great panel with various opinions all the way from trying to avoid the Tech Stack in your business with an all in 1 solution. To being particular with the partners and taking time to make the decisions. Thank you to the panel for such an interesting discussion....Wade Allen, Alessandro Biggi, Adam Klaers, Davide Macchi, Philip McGahey, Meredith Sandland, Joseph Szala, GSD, DCMJ. 3. Invest and Be Invested in - Great Panel giving us a little insight on where the experts are putting their money these days. With a rougher than normal economy the last couple of years it was good to hear that there is money out there still dedicated to restaurants. At the end of the day people have to eat and from the sound of it after this panel Brands are looking to diversify their offerings and grow their current brands. Which I feel is great news. Thank you to the Panel for the insight and looking forward to seeing each of your next move in the space. Felipe Athayde, Jim Balis, Taylor DeHart, Lauren Fernandez, Geoff Henry, Ashley Robinson, Michael Schatzberg.
