It's Mental Health Awareness Week! Did you know that 1 in 5 children experience a mental health challenge in a given year? It's a staggering statistic, but behind every number, there's a story 💙 Children facing mental health challenges might experience: Anxiety: Feeling overwhelmed, fearful, or constantly worried about everyday situations. Depression: Persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, self-isolation changes in sleep or appetite. Behavioural Challenges: Acting out, aggression, lack of focus, emotional outbursts. It's crucial to recognise these signs early and provide the support and resources needed for children to thrive. Let's break the stigma and prioritise mental health for our youngest generation. #childrensmentalhealth #childwellbeing #socialemotionallearning #childdevelopment #formativeyears #breakthestimga

According to a 2023 Pew Research poll, nearly 9 out of 10 young people aged 14 to 25 regularly face mental health challenges. The reasons behind the high rates of sadness and depression in teenagers are complex and multifaceted, and distinguishing between mental health issues and typical hormonal emotions can be challenging. In our new session, we delve into strategies for identifying teenagers who may be struggling with their mental health, how to ask appropriate questions, and unravel the complexities of the modern-day mental health crisis. ❌ Myth: Children don't experience mental health problems. ✔️ Fact: Children and adolescents can experience mental health issues just like adults. Studies show that mental health conditions often manifest during childhood and adolescence, though they may present differently from adults. Ignoring or dismissing these concerns can lead to long-term consequences for their emotional, social, and academic growth. That's why early intervention and support are crucial for their well-being and development. #healthandwellness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness

In recent years, we've seen a rise in teens experiencing anxiety and depression. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death for individuals aged 15-24 in the United States. Almost 20% of high school students have experienced suicidal thoughts. While these statistics are concerning, it's important that we don't lose hope. In honor of #SuicidePreventionMonth, let’s look at a few ways we can support youth in managing their mental health: ❤️ Be a safe relationship: Youth need adults who demonstrate predictability and consistency and are attuned to their needs and concerns 💬 Be an empathic ear: Ask open-ended questions, showing empathy and understanding when young people share about their lives 🧘 Promote healthy coping skills: Teach and encourage healthy ways to cope with stress and anxiety, such as movement, mindful breathing and self-care. 👩⚕️ Seek professional support when needed: Know when the challenges require additional support and reach out to a trained mental health professional or crisis resource center. May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Let's remember to give mental health the same attention and respect as physical health. Despite progress, there is still a significant stigma surrounding mental health issues. The number of youth diagnosed with mental illness, particularly anxiety and depression, has increased significantly. The reality of the world they are growing up in cannot be overlooked. Adults are also struggling with mental illness, especially anxiety and depression, due to the current state of affairs in the world. Many are overwhelmed with how to make ends meet as things become more expensive. Parents are navigating working and parenting simultaneously, experiencing a tremendous amount of overwhelm. They worry about the world they are leaving their children. I am grateful for Mental Health Awareness Month, which draws attention to these issues and opens the door to conversation. Mental illness awareness is something we need every day of the year. Let's choose kindness, compassion, empathy, and support over judgment. #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #anxiety #depression #compassion #support #kindness #empathy
