SNEAK PEEK - Meet one of the faces and minds behind Wise - The voice of older people exhibition. You can't not be impressed by Juniper Home Care customer Margaret's intellect. Margaret carved a highly successful career as one of Australia’s foremost mediators, ultimately leading to her being honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia. Among her many accomplishments has been twice flying the Outback Air Race after taking up the hobby in her 50's. Now, almost three decades after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, Margaret continues to take pleasure in her work and has provided this project with insights into what it is to age, happiness and the future. To see Margaret's mesmerising portrait by Steve Wise and to watch Margaret's story on video, head down to the Perth Town Hall between November 21-27 for this free exhibition.

"Together we can, but alone I can't" Day 1 of the World Congress The Power of the Collective kicked off with powerful discussions on collective power, the importance of recognizing everyone’s strengths, and how we can work together to support survivors across different contexts. From exploring intersectionality to sharing trauma-informed practices, we are building a stronger, united movement led by lived experience. This image is graphic documentation from our discussions on collective power, tools for survivor support, and the importance of recognizing everyone’s strengths in building collective movements. Did you attend the World Congress? What key lessons did you take from Day 1? NENA Federation VP, Maureen Peters Gittelman shared some profound words today in our conference planning meeting. As hospitality and tourism educators, we inspire and guide our students every day. But to truly empower them, we must first prioritize our own well-being. "Self-care" isn't selfish; it's essential. When we take the time to recharge, reflect, and nurture ourselves, we become better mentors, ready to support our students in their journeys and embrace an "Ocean of Possibility". Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup. Invest in yourself—your health, your passions, your peace. By prioritizing self-care, we not only elevate our own lives but also set a powerful example for our future leaders in the industry. Let’s cultivate a culture of care, for ourselves and for those we inspire! After all, we need to be well rested to make waves 🌊! #NENE2025 #SelfCare #Educators #Empowerment #HospitalityAndTourism https://lnkd.in/gUG7HMn2

As David Foot, a Canadian economist, famously said in “Boom, Bust, and Echo” (1996)’demographics is the key to understanding the past and forecasting the future’. The Hamilton Spectator’s excellent editorial team has written an important piece entitled “Ensuring care for the caregivers“, (April 20,2024). The editorial states that according to a newly-released Statistics Canada study, 13.4 million Canadians – 42% – now provide unpaid care to children or adults. Of these, 13% – 1.8 million Canadians – are members of the “sandwich generation, a group called upon to provide care to members of both groups. The toll this responsibility takes on individuals and families is significant. Often caregivers report negative health effects, such as feeling depressed, anxious, and overwhelmed. On every metric, women fared less well than men. This is definitely a women’s issue. According to a 2022 report from Toronto Metropolitan Universities’ National Institute on Aging, unpaid caregivers deliver 75% of all home care hours, thereby saving the healthcare system $10 billion. Home Care Ontario is exceptionally grateful for the recent additional funding of $2B for home care recently made by the Ford government. It is clear that our Health Minister S. Jones and her team has heard our concerns and the concerns of Ontarians. Now, it is imperative that the necessary funding be put into ‘direct front-line care provision’ to patients in order to support caregivers everywhere. https://lnkd.in/gGCZF4HJ #NationalCaregivingStrategy #CarersCanada #CanadianCentreforCaregiverExcellence #NationalInstituteonAgeing #SylviaJones #DirectCare #HamiltonSpectator

If you do nothing else today, do these two things: 1. Watch this video. You can't gift yourself a better start to your week. 2. Book Alvin Law, CSP, HoF to speak to your company, team, or at your next conference or event. Alvin delivered a keynote address at the FocalPoint conference last week that had the audience present, engaged, crying, laughing, and overall feeling like we can (and do!) great things. As an occupational therapist, of course, I was enamoured with his story of being born without arms...and...in the 60's. I have been fortunate enough to have worked with others like him who have grit, tenacity, persistence, and resilience. They have overcome things you and I haven't, and things we may never face. We can learn so much from the lessons they share. Alvin's lessons: 1. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐘𝐎𝐔 (my deep thought: it never was). 2. 𝐖𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 (my deep thought: so much of our choices are socialized, we have less agency than we think). 3. 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫-𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫 (my deep thought: I am a fixer-upper, always). 4. 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 (my deep thought: done). 5. 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 (my deep thought: I am working on this). We all need to be careful with the stories and narratives we create about our own lives. These stories contain gifts, and you CAN put down your past to free yourself for your future. It's hard, but you CAN (insert Positive Intelligence). Watch this video and start your Monday with a smile. Then 𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐓 it. Everyone needs to see this. The more we share things like this, the more understood and included the disability community becomes. Alvin Law, CSP, HoF is playing the drums at 2:05 and 2:45. "Stand by me when I want to give up Stand by me so I know I'm enough... Cause love is nothing more than you and me Celebrating what makes us unique... Strong alone, but stronger together Believe in me and each season we'll weather... Know you are not alone in this galaxy We are one world, one family..." https://lnkd.in/g3A3dmMM
