A growing number of hospitals and health systems are considering partnerships as they navigate industry headwinds. While facing similar concerns, the Watertown Regional Medical Center (WRMC) board knew the organization needed a partner to best serve the community going forward. In 2014, the board conducted a competitive process to thoroughly assess strategic ownership alternatives, ultimately deciding to enter into a joint venture transaction with a larger company. This partnership allowed the organization to remain financially viable, improve quality initiatives, retain employees and services, build collaborative relationships with medical staff, and retain material local governance responsibility. The unique structure also led to the creation of the Greater Watertown Community Health Foundation, which has served as a catalyst for transforming the health and well-being of the community. There's no question that Ontario's hospitals are facing major challenges as we continue to rebuild our health care system post-pandemic. Take a read of what Ontario's hospital CEOs are thinking in our report below.
Do hospitals have enough funding? How secure are hospitals from cyberattacks? Many Ontario hospital CEOs are thinking the same things. While there are differences in experiences across hospital systems stemming from geography, population, community make up, and fundraising capacity, there are also clear similarities across these organizations when it comes to some of the challenges they’re encountering like funding, health human resources, expectations from their communities, and system integration. StrategyCorp’s Healthcare Communications and Engagement Practice interviewed CEOs from hospitals across Ontario to understand their perspectives on the most pressing issues in healthcare today. A great read even for someone not directly in the health care industry. The challenges that they face are so hard to communicate fully to the rest of us. A couple of things struck me on fundraising, beyond people who work at foundations being asked for more innovation. The first is the laser focus on community and how you message. People are more apt to donate to immediate, care closer to home. This is increasingly the case the smaller a community is. But my take is that this can also be important for large urban areas where people still have ‘local’ hospitals where they tend to end up for emergency care as well as specialists for the most part. In our area I know that Michael Garron Hospital and Sunnybrook are working with community or looking to do so more. That said, I believe that smaller communities of course have a different focus. The second thing was the dilemma of hospital fundraising ‘draining’ the donor pool where there may not be enough people to give to other social needs. This is of course not good for the community in the end. And it’s not good for the hospital either because lack of social services such as sufficient mental health resources , end up bringing more people to the hospital. In the end, the North Star is community. And hospitals are indeed pillars of their communities and can be a central driver of support from the residents and businesses of the community, maybe not just to their own foundations but somehow helping awareness for related local social service providers . Anyway, kudos to our great hospitals and their foundations. The province depends on you and it is a lot of responsibility.
