It was such an honour to be asked to join an episode of Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC)'s Healthcare Change Makers podcast, with the accomplished and kind leader Patricia Hoffer of St. Joseph's Health Care London. We talked about the value of communications being at the leadership table in health care organizations, the risks of not engaging with comms at the right time, and about how to get other leaders to see the value of comms. (Heads-up McMaster University Master of Communications Management - lots of MCM-aligned discussions here!) We also got to share about a piece of work that has given us joy. Interestingly, both Patricia and I said it's our teams who give us joy. I shared that I get the most joy from the work the entire CAMH Public Affairs and Communications team has done to show up for each other and for our work in such a supportive way, particularly by being so committed to bringing our whole selves to work. "For example – this is so small – we have a little WhatsApp chat for our leadership team…and you know it’s “who should I go to for this or that?” it’s work stuff. It’s also a lot of cat memes. It’s also a lot of “my kid threw up today. My emails are going to be a bit slower.” Half our leadership team are moms with young kids. And I can’t tell you the difference that’s made for the other folks on the team to understand what that morning looked like for folks. But also for other people who are going through difficulties with caring for a parent or are really doing some work on themselves from a therapy perspective…just this idea of when we start to open ourselves up a little bit. It can feel like we’re being too vulnerable or feel like we’re not keeping boundaries up. But I think it’s part of how we show up as our whole selves: we’re also giving permission to each other to show up as our whole selves. And we’re just going to get better work as a result…we’re going to have better work, we’re going to have people feeling more deeply committed and connected to each other..." #HIROCHealthcareChangeMakers #healthcareleaders
