Thanks to Stuff for the great write-up recently! We're inviting businesses in Pōneke to get on board our solution to reduce food waste to landfill and its planet-heating emissions, and support the growth of local food systems, toward a thriving, low-carbon future for our city. Local food growing - in māra kai, schools, community gardens, urban farms, backyards, berms and more - generates a wide range of local benefits: from mental health and wellbeing, to boosting local food growing skills and knowledge, supporting community cohesion, biodiversity, reducing carbon emissions from our food supply chain, and plenty more. There are already dozens of community gardens and urban farms in Pōneke. If this became hundreds, imagine how the positive impacts would add up! But we need a local supply of compost to set up and fuel them. This is why we are strong advocates for localised composting - to ensure some of our city's food scraps are going into producing these local benefits, rather than all being trucked away to large facilities. https://lnkd.in/gxcdbA2w

The City of Fayetteville is launching a new pilot program to collect food waste right at your curb! Food waste makes up nearly 20% of the total waste Fayetteville sends to the landfill, where it creates methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. We're partnering with Ozark Compost and Swap (OCS) for the pilot, which is aimed at determining the demand from Fayetteville residents for a City-run food waste curbside collection program. During the pilot period – a free month of food waste collections by OCS – your food waste will be taken to the City's composting facility for us to make a high quality compost. Participants are not obligated to continue service with OCS beyond the pilot period. Curbside food waste collections will begin in January 2025. Time for another #EnvironmentalFact! There was 292.4 million tons of municipal solid waste in 2018. Of that, 69 million tons were recycled and 25 million tons were composted. 17.7 million tons were food waste and were used for animal feed, donations, wastewater treatment, or one of the many other food waste management pathways. It is so important for the environment and landfill management that we dispose of our waste through the proper channels. Find out how to properly dispose of your different types of waste with our #EnvironmentalComplianceTraining at ecatts.com or envicomply.com!

💧💧On #WorldWaterDay, we want to acknowledge the deep connection between water conservation and food waste. Every day, a significant amount of water is wasted in the production and disposal of food that never gets eaten. When rescuing and redistributing surplus food, we're not just fighting hunger, but also saving precious water resources. By reducing food waste, we not only save food but also conserve water resources, contributing to a healthier planet for future generations. Check out the link in bio to learn more about how you can get involved! #SecondHarvest #NoWasteNoHunger #WorldWaterDay #FoodRescue #StopFoodWaste #SustainableFuture

Is anyone out there interested in food waste (and actions to reduce it)? We're having a kick off meeting 3-4pm on Tuesday 23rd April that will bring together businesses, community groups, council people and others to start to look at how we can reduce food waste in Stockport. It's part of the Stockport Food Partnership work that's been developing over the past year. Reducing food waste can save businesses money, reduce waste going to landfill, help tackle climate change and can support community groups by providing them with food that can still be used. Come along to help us plan and develop actions. Please bring with you: ideas for actions, connections/contacts, best practice examples, information about your group/groups who deliver in this space, considerations of how this group can lead and deliver actions. Give me a shout if you'd like to be part of it and feel free to share with anyone who's interested in this topic and who would like to attend the meeting. #stockport #foodwaste #climateaction #climateactionnow #stockportfoodpartnership
