🌳 We have been talking about agroforestry systems and investing before (with Brett Hundley, CFA, Jonas Steinfeld, PhD, Jan-Gisbert Schultze, Sven Verwiel and many more): #trees were the answer to whatever your question was. But... how do you start an #agroforestry industry right in the middle of the belly of the beast, the American Midwest, where corn and soy are everywhere, leases are 1 to 3 years, and there are no trees as far as the eye can see? And especially here, trees are needed, not as magical #carbon sequestration tools, but as #climate adaptation, against erosion, wind breaks, to protect animals and crops, nutrient leaking into streams, and, of course, to produce a lot of food integrated into the fields. What does it take to build an agroforestry industry here? What about finance, equipment, planting, seedlings, tree nursery, harvesting, markets, and much more? Wow! Learnt a lot within a small time. among the levels 1,2 and 3 this showed many nature based approaches. It Started from what is Nature Based Solutions. Then moved through Organic Farming, agroforestry, Mob Grazing, Cover cropping, intercropping and mixed cropping, no till cultivation, Strip cropping Crop rotation and diversification usage of Perennial crops in relation to carbon sequestration and improving land use. Multipurpose hedges biodiversity strips, market gardening, organic fertilizers. Bioremediation was an interesting area to learn. Paludiculture, mob grazing, cover cropping, Agroforestry was focused on carbon sequestration and how to improve the carbon content in soil. Then learnt about chemical soil degradation, climate change adaptation through species diversification, selective logging, soil erosion and landslide mitigation. One of the key concepts learned here was about green and blue infrastructure which is related with urban farming. there were several case studies regarding that. and finally IUCN global standards and its 8 criteria document revision was done at the end of level 3. It was interesting to learn about various approaches which is followed by the international community with special reference to Europe to face climate change. I just wanted to take a minute to talk about one (in my opinion) often forgotten aspect of our current ecological problems: Soil degradation. Due to modern agricultural techniques many topsoils around the world are in bad condition, 90% of topsoils are at risk by 2050 (https://lnkd.in/dveXKuxE). Since soil is the basis of basically all food, we are running the risk of severe food shortages if unadressed. Luckily, this can be turned around with the adoption of various sustainable techniques (e.g. using cover crops, crop rotation and agroforestry), which also would lead to a sizeable load of CO2 being sucked out of the athmosphere, much needed in the fight against #ClimateChange. #SoilDegradation #SaveSoil

Delaying the #EUDR by a year. Let's hope that this year is spent VERY effectively addressing the issues that would otherwise negatively affect small-holder farmers. It is imperative that there is a balance between the "good intentions" of the #EU not exporting their carbon footprint to developing countries, and the right safeguards for those who are at most risk from loss of forest livelihoods.
