Happy National Lorry Week! 🚛 This week marks 10 years of Road Haulage Association (RHA)'s National Lorry Week campaign, championing the incredible (and often unsung) heroes that keep our country moving. To celebrate this milestone, here are some surprising facts about the lorry industry: 1. The first-ever lorry was invented in 1896 and was called the ‘Daimler Motor Lastwagen’. It could reach whopping speeds of up to 7mph! 2. Over 80% of all goods in the UK are transported by lorries, making them the quiet backbone of our daily lives. 3. Lorry drivers spend an estimated 240 nights away from home each year. 4. Only 1% of all lorry drivers are female – a small but mighty group of trailblazers! 5. According to research in New Zealand, the methane in the flatulence of one sheep could power a small lorry to go 25 miles a day…talk about natural gas! Counting down to Friday the 15th, where the best drivers in the country will be rewarded and celebrated by Hollard. A solution driven programme by Hollard aimed to teach good driving culture, prevent carnages on the road, protect commodities, and also promote accountability to drivers behind the wheels on the road. In 2023 reported that road freight amounts to 84% of all commodities transported at a time, this increase can be attributed to the slow decline in rail freight . These drivers are measured on these fundamental pillars, Speeding, Fatigue(Day and Night, taking a break after few hours is essential), Harsh Braking (Good following distance is key) and mileage travelled. It's National Road Safety Week 🚌 This year, National Road Safety Week asks everyone who drives, to proudly make the pledge to drive so others survive. Sadly, every year in Australia, around 1200 people lose their lives due to road accidents, while more than 40,000 people are seriously injured*. Traffic injuries are the leading cause of death for Australian children under the age of 15 and the second leading cause of death for all Australians between the ages of 15 and 24*. 🚨 Austroads has released new guidelines to tackle driver distraction, aiming to reduce crashes and serious injuries on Australian and New Zealand roads. The updated framework addresses distractions beyond just phone use, including external sources and in-vehicle activities like eating and using entertainment systems. This is part of a larger Austroads plan to enhance road safety, with ongoing research to further understand and address the issue of distracted driving. 📈🚗

Did you know that trucking regulations differ not only between countries but also across Canadian provinces? In Canada, provinces like British Columbia have stricter weight limits and require chains during winter. Ontario allows higher gross vehicle weights (GVW) but strict safety inspections. Quebec has spring thaw restrictions to protect the roads, and the Prairies offer higher GVW limits for specialized rigs. In Atlantic Canada, shorter trailers are often required due to narrower roads and older infrastructure.   In the U.S., regulations vary state-by-state too.
