The tradition of the #Olympic Truce – Ekecheiria – has been to ensure a halt of all hostilities, allowing the safe passage and participation of athletes and spectators taking part in the Olympic Games. The resolution reaffirms that the Olympic values of peace, solidarity and respect are as important across the world today as they were over 3,000 years ago, when the ancient Olympic Games first took place in Greece. #Paris2024

The 33rd Olympic Games are opening today in Paris.   The five interlocking Olympic Rings, created by the founder of the modern Olympic Games Pierre de Coubertin in 1913, symbolise the coming together of athletes from around the world.   The Symbol has over the past century become one of the most recognisable and valuable brands worldwide.   Since 1982, it has even been protected by the Nairobi Treaty – a multilateral agreement administered by WIPO that grants a special status to the Olympic Symbol.   Signatory states are to refuse or invalidate the registration of any trademark that consists of or contains the Olympic Symbol, unless authorised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).   It also enables the IOC to take action against any unauthorised use of the Olympic Symbol, to prevent its commercial exploitation in ways that do not reflect the values of the Olympic Movement: Excellence, Respect and Friendship. We are profoundly dismayed by the recent actions of the Paris International Olympic Committee (IOC) organizers in allowing the portrayal of the Last Supper with drag queens, which was acknowledged only after significant public backlash. This decision not only contradicts the Olympic spirit but has also deeply offended our associates from diverse backgrounds and faiths. We stand with them in condemning this portrayal, which shows a troubling insensitivity to the sacred symbols and traditions that many hold dear. Such actions undermine the very foundations of respect and understanding that should be at the heart of the Olympics and all its associated cultural exhibitions. We urge the organizers to not only address this lapse in judgment but also to take definitive steps to ensure that future exhibitions fully respect and reflect the diverse tapestry of global cultures and beliefs.
