In 2025, I'm planning to recruit at least one intern to help develop versatile and highly reusable open-source tools for the biodiversity informatics community. This would be a 12-week internship, and I'll be providing guidance throughout the project. As this is new territory for me, I’d love to hear your thoughts and advice! Specifically: - Does this approach sound beneficial to the field? Is it feasible for an intern to work mostly remotely, provided I find the right candidate? Or would pairing two interns be more effective for team support? - Where would be the best platforms to post this opportunity? - Any recommendations for universities or academic programs with strong candidates in this field? - Knowing internships are typically unpaid in Belgium, how can I fairly recognize and reward the intern’s contributions? I’m considering covering transport, coworking space access, or equipment as needed. - What expectations should I set for this kind of role? - For those in biodiversity: are there current projects (existing or imaginary) that could use an extra pair of hands? - Do you already know of promising candidates?
