Growing up in poverty means facing daily struggles that shape a child’s education, health, and sense of possibility. Limited resources can restrict access to opportunities, from quality schooling to essential healthcare, impacting prospects far into adulthood. How does early hardship affect a child’s potential? What support is most crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty? In Seven Children, Danny Dorling reveals how deep inequality impacts children’s lives across the UK, using seven fictional but data-driven child characters to represent the socioeconomic range. Inspired by the Seven Up! documentary, he explores how factors like income, housing, and access to resources shape childhood experiences, emphasizing the erosion of compassion and shared responsibility in society. Human geographer Sander van Lanen will have a conversation with Danny Dorling to compare the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. 👧🏻 Inequality and the Next Generation - Danny Dorling and Sander van Lanen 📆 Wednesday 11 December ⏰ 8 PM 📍 Geertsemazaal, Academy Building Broerstraat 5 More info and tickets via https://lnkd.in/e9TzYCMf

I'm officially back on the conference scene. I'll be speaking at the Association of Colleges 's QTLA conference this December about all things poverty, policy, and the damaging impact of our deficit lens. 'Poverty Inclusive Practice: This session considers how poverty can potentially impact the learning experience, and how further education can inadvertently create distance between their colleges, their learners and the communities that they serve. This abstraction from the everyday lives of poverty-experienced learners can ‘other' individuals, impacting on belongingness, motivation and ultimately, engagement and attendance. I'll present my doctoral research on how we can develop poverty inclusive practices in further education, and why we need to.'

In order to thrive, children need caring, available adults and secure, nurturing environments with consistent access to basic needs. Unfortunately, poverty makes it difficult for families to provide all of this; in 2022, over 9 million children were living in poverty, which is too many. Come see me at this afternoon's poster session at the National Research Conference for Early Childhood to learn how Economic Mobility Pathways - EMPath's Mobility Mentoring approach can help families on their economic mobility journeys. #nrcec2024 Full report ("Moving the Whole Family Ahead: Realizing the 2-gen Potential of Early Childhood Programs by Integrating Economic Mobility Coaching) available here: https://lnkd.in/g2B2Qz3N
