Your ESL staff are in most cases NOT learning English through government funded programs. Why? 2 Examples from conversations I have had with people this week. Example #1 Employee is trying to take funded English classes. The expectations are 9 hours a week (in the evenings), plus homework. He works shift-work, he is being told that if he doesn’t attend regularly he’ll be kicked out of the class (hard to do when working various shifts). He’s being told if he doesn’t do all of his homework he’ll be kicked out of class. He’s tired and exhausted, he has a young child that he doesn't get to see much at the moment. He doesn’t know what to do. Example #2 A woman with young children, working full-time was trying to take funded online classes as she had no childcare in evening. Same thing, multiple hours in the evening. Her young kids were having to be put in front of the tv for hours & hours. She was losing out on spending time with them due to the commitment of the class. The last straw though was one evening she had to pop out of class to put her child to bed. When she came back to class the online instructor lectured her about how she can’t be doing that (take care of her child while in class). She quit soon after that. ➡ The funded language system in Canada is broken ➡ The funded language system is NOT geared towards adults working full time. Want to help your staff? Navigating the public health system can be a daunting experience, even for those fluent in English. Recently, I found myself overwhelmed by the sheer amount of paperwork 📄, electronic correspondence 💻, and the stress of managing appointments 📅—all while dealing with a diverse array of medical professionals 👩⚕️👨⚕️It made me realise just how challenging this process would be for someone who is not a native English speaker. Imagine trying to understand complex medical terminology, filling out endless forms, and communicating with healthcare providers, who in some cases have limited English skills themselves—all in a language you're still learning. The stress, confusion, and potential for miscommunication are enormous! At one point, I had to enlist the help of my daughter, who dialed into my consultations by telephone and took extensive notes, asking questions and clarifying information. This made me acutely aware of how critical it is to be able to advocate for yourself in such situations. For ESL learners, mastering English isn't just about improving job prospects or social interactions—it's about being able to confidently navigate essential services and advocate for themselves in critical situations 🚑. At Leanne's Language Lessons, our goal is to empower ESL students to handle these real-life challenges with greater ease, reducing stress and ensuring they can access the care and support they need. Let’s work together to make the world more accessible for everyone, one lesson at a time 🌏. #ESL #EnglishLearning #Healthcare #LanguageEmpowerment #SelfAdvocacy #PatientAdvocacy #InclusiveEducation #CulturalDiversity #CommunicationSkills #PublicHealth #LifelongLearning #LanguageSkills #Empowerment #SupportSystem #LeannesLanguageLessons

As school administrators, engaging a reliable interpretation service is essential for fostering an inclusive environment where every family feels supported. Interpretation services ensure that parents and students with limited English proficiency can fully engage in school activities and communicate effectively with staff. This is critical for building trust, promoting student success, and ensuring equitable access to resources and information. By partnering with high-quality, professional interpreters, you are not only facilitating communication but also bridging cultural divides, which is vital for creating a supportive and diverse learning community. Prioritizing these services demonstrates your commitment to inclusivity and academic excellence for all students. ✨ Crazy things I did to become a Learning Support Officer for SEND students in a UK secondary school – all as a non-native English speaker! 🌍 🌟 The journey to becoming a #LearningSupportOfficer for #SEND students in a UK secondary school as a #NonNativeEnglishSpeaker has been anything but ordinary! 🌟 As someone navigating a new #EducationalSystem in a language that isn’t my first, the path has been filled with challenges and growth. One of the biggest hurdles? The #LanguageBarrier. Communicating effectively with both students and colleagues meant I had to work twice as hard to ensure nothing was “lost in translation.” I constantly pushed myself to improve my language skills so that I could support my students with confidence and clarity. There were moments of #SelfDoubt, but my dedication to helping #SENDstudents thrive kept me going. I learned to adapt, listen deeply, and be resilient. Overcoming these obstacles has given me a unique perspective and reinforced my commitment to fostering an #InclusiveEnvironment where every student feels seen and supported. Breaking down barriers is never easy, but every challenge has only strengthened my resolve. 💪 Here’s to every student finding a voice, and every educator who dares to make a difference, no matter where they come from! 🌎 #EducationJourney #InclusiveEducation #UKSchools #OvercomingBarriers #Resilience

The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program helps permanent residents improve their English and ease their settlement journey. Many participants are racialized newcomers who face complex challenges, and our recent shift back to in-person classes revealed a growing need for mental health support. Staff have referred students to NYCH’s settlement and mental health workers for holistic family care. 💬🧠 Read our Annual Report 2023 - 2024 here: https://ow.ly/2MPN50TPcmO 📚 Our Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 1-2 class saw literacy challenges, which we addressed by bringing in volunteer tutors for personalized one-on-one support. This tailored approach has made a real difference in their learning journeys. 👩🏫✨ 👩⚕️ Guest speakers from Public Health Toronto also provided students, many of whom are young mothers, with valuable insights on stress management, self-care, and healthcare access. 💪💕 Through a collaboration with our Truth and Reconciliation Coordinator, we’ve created lesson plans that teach students about Indigenous history and culture, fostering a deeper connection to Canada. 🍁 💻 Our evening classes continue online, making it easier for students to balance work, family, and learning, while also building digital literacy skills. We're proud to see participants become more confident using technology to access resources and enhance their learning. 🌐📲 #LINCProgram #SettlementJourney #LanguageLearning #NewcomersToCanada #MentalHealthSupport #DigitalLiteracy #CommunitySupport #TruthAndReconciliation #RacializedNewcomers #Toronto

On average, it will take 5-7 years for someone to become fluent in English. Many factors affect how long it will take, such as someone's native language and its similarity to English, an individual's educational background, and the time they can invest in learning English. For many individuals who work full-time, there is very little time for them to practice or attend classes. By offering classes onsite for employees, you will be decreasing the amount of time it will take until they are able to communicate more effectively at work. #languageliteracy #ESL #workplaceliteracy #workplacecommunication #workplacetalentsolutions
