Some years back, I was in Kolkata on an official assignment, and was staying at prominent five-star hotel. During the evening hours, I bumped into their Head of F&B, who introduced himself, politely handed his business card, and requested me to contact him in case he could be of any service to me. I reciprocated his courtesy, and handed over my business card as well. Then I asked him, " I am a fan of Bengali cuisine. Can you recommend some good joints in the vicinity of your hotel, where I can get authentic Bengali food for dinner?" In just two minutes, he rattled off the names of three such joints, much to my amusement. 😊 Then I asked him, "Why haven't you asked me, what I am looking for, and first check if you can offer that to me right here, instead of sending me to some other place?" Much embarrassed, he asked me the same, and I listed out three basic items including one fish item, which I was craving for. Within half an hour, my dinner was served to me in my room, and I really enjoyed the same. A key lesson here was that, in the enthusiasm of fulfilling the desires of your guests/clientele, instead of straightaway directing them to your competitors or elsewhere, first try to understand their exact needs at that particular point of time, and try hard to fulfil the same. Surely, such an effort would earn you greater loyalty from them. 😊

The Day Hospitality Stood Tall – Remembering 26/11 Fifteen years ago, on November 26, 2008, the bustling corridors of the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai were filled with the hum of life. Guests checked in, laughter echoed from the dining halls, and the warmth of hospitality enveloped the iconic hotel. But by nightfall, everything changed. Terror struck at the heart of Mumbai, and the Taj became one of its battlegrounds. Chaos unfolded, but amidst the darkness, stories of courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to service emerged. Team members shielded guests, guiding them to safety, often risking their own lives. Chefs, housekeepers, and managers—people who normally worked quietly behind the scenes—became protectors. The hotel's pillars bore witness to acts of humanity and selflessness that redefined what it means to serve. For those of us in hospitality, the events of 26/11 are more than history. They are a testament to the spirit of our industry—a reminder that even in the face of terror, the values of care, compassion, and courage can shine through. Today, we remember the lives lost, the sacrifices made, and the indomitable spirit of those who chose service over self.
