If You Don't Control Your Brand, Others Will Why Promise-Based Branding Matters A brand is not a logo or a tagline (although it may include these). A brand is not a mission statement, a website or an ad (although it may be expressed in these). A brand is a promise your product or service can keep ... a benefit to customers and prospects that is understandable, believable, delivers superior value and differentiates you from the competition. Whatever your current branding efforts are intending to do, they are perceived by your audience as making a promise. Love the definition of brand in today's post by Seth Godin: "A brand is not a logo. A brand is a promise, a story and a shorthand. A brand tells us what to expect the next time we engage with you." And his note that rebranding is more than 're-logo-ing' is spot on. I would add that for people who are part of a member-organization, branding is about a sense of pride in belonging. #branding #brandidentity

Avoid "fast-fashion branding". It's trendy, low quality, and doesn't last very long. It's imitating others, surface level, and it will look outdated quickly. Instead, focus on branding that reflects your unique POV, is a great investment, and endures. » Ideally, do this as you create your brand. » If you already have a brand, it's never too late to strengthen it. » If your business changes over time, evolve select pieces to reflect it. When in doubt, ask yourself if the quality of your brand matches the quality of the services you provide. Or ask a trusted peer, client, or professional.
