One of the biggest barriers to the transformational change required to achieve #NetZero according to a new report by The Carbon Trust? Greenstalling. So what is it? 😵 Where businesses in the earlier stages of #climateaction enter a state of 'paralysis analysis' for fear of the external scrutiny of their progress. It’s a comms issue 😬 🥾 Uncertainty over HOW TO communicate #transitionplans has now become a critical barrier to taking steps forward in the right direction. There are some great tips in the report to address #greenstalling, such as building confidence through aligning with best practice and external validation and verification, working with peers to establish what 'good' looks like, but I wanted to pull out a few points on what's required from a communications perspective; 👇🏽 ✅ Embrace radical transparency ✅ Communicate progress with honesty and accuracy ✅ Be open about challenges and critical success factors ✅ Use the #transitionplan as an opportunity to chart new, progressive paths forward that will allow the business to thrive in a #NetZero economy Carbon Trust’s Net Zero Intelligence Unit manager Nina Foster said in last week's Edie article (🔗 in comments) ; “Celebrate your progress, but just be a bit more radically honest about where you are on your journey. That’s where businesses can take action to avoid greenstalling, but also avoid the trap of kind of over claiming what they’ve done.” This report provides yet more evidence of the crucial role of effective communications in accelerating business transformation. Do you think utilities will meet Net Zero targets by 2030? 🧐 That's a question I asked a 500+ audience at this week's World Water-Tech Innovation Summit in London. How many people do you think stood up to say yes? Ahead of the panel (featuring the awesome Marcia Barbosa, Desirée Marín, Alexis de Kerchove, Pier Vittorio Rebba, Victor OLLIVIER) I predicted around 40%. In reality? It was more like 5%! It seems very few people in the industry are optimistic that the Net Zero ambitions will be achievable, especially given the current financial and political challenges. And given that more, often concrete heavy infrastructure will need to be built to enable people to gain access to water and sanitation services, for example, in nations like Brazil, how can you balance and offset this against carbon targets? Despite the quite depressing vote result, it was still an energising and superb gathering of key stakeholders. Remote working and the efficiency of Zoom calls are often romanticised. 🌍 There is a broad and growing consensus that rapid decarbonisation is needed to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. But this does not mean ‘business-as-usual’ until then; it means taking substantial action NOW to reduce and mitigate existing unavoidable emissions before 2030. In addition our Climate Transition Plan sets out the direction for Uniper's transformation towards its climate targets. Highlights from the Climate Transition Plan include: ✔️ Setting accelerated decarbonization targets to achieve carbon neutrality across our value chain by 2040 and for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035. ✔️ Transforming our portfolio by phasing out coal power, investing in renewables, and transitioning gas-fired capacities to hydrogen or biofuels. ✔️ Committing to a just transition by engaging stakeholders to ensure a fair shift to a low-carbon future. ✔️ Appointing our first Human Rights Officer, aligning our practices with international standards to reinforce ethical business conduct. “We’re playing a decisive role in transforming the energy system.
