With substantial funds and investments, there is no doubt that #SaudiArabia aims not just to enter the travel market but to become a leading destination in the region, rivaling the UAE, Egypt, and Jordan. However, this ambitious goal is challenging to achieve, as most investments are currently directed toward infrastructure. A clear plan is needed to develop a qualified workforce to elevate Saudi Arabia to this global stage. As an Account Manager, interacting daily with hotel partners in this market, I observe that the Saudi government will need decades to build a talented and qualified workforce to reach the desired status as a preferred travel destination. This can only be accomplished if there is simultaneous investment in human resources alongside infrastructure development #travelindustry #saudiarabia #traveldestination #toursim #neom
“Saudi Arabia is serious about tourism so it will need to cater to a wide range of people and prices. What I want to see is room for a certain segment of the private sector: early-stage entrepreneurs and innovators building something from the ground up.” https://hubs.li/Q02yt3Lq0

I recently had some family time in Langkawi. Having spent quite a number of times on the island during my younger years (particularly during those happening LIMA days), I was expecting more development, better infrastructure, economically inclined communities, and of course, more buzz for the tourism industry. Boy..., was I disappointed (and quite sad too). On the surface, it looks like the locals are not better off economically (I may be wrong, and I hope I am too). Many shops are no longer in operation, buildings are dilapidated, and some attractions are rotting with garbage. Yes, Pantai Cenang is still somewhat full of vibes. The skybridge is amazing as ever. There are also plenty of foreign tourists about (Fly Dubai goes direct & so does Turkish Airlines JV with Batik Air). But it's 2024, and it should be much better. So instead of blaming Covid, politicians, and whoever, perhaps we can make a difference. I'm not just talking about Langkawi, but many local destinations as well. If you are in a position of power, host your international trainings, meetings, workshops, or conference in places like Langkawi. Why do we need to go to London, Cambridge, Oxford, or even Bali to organize/attend a conference? Particularly in Islamic Finance or the Halal Economy where all the Subject Matter Experts are homegrown. We should be proud of what we have in our own backyard. And who says you cannot see a school of Dolphins glide in the oceans in Langkawi? We did.... and the bluest sea as far as the eyes can see. Not mentioning Mount Kinabalu, the Mulu Caves, Taman Negara, etc. So, here's my challenge to you: let's show some love to our local spots to the world. By supporting them, we're not just boosting the economy but also giving back to our communities (and that's applied SDG too, right? 😊)

Encouraged Seeing Discussion to Reinstated the Hospitality Industry that was in a Stagnant Mode. =================== Despite all odds, I hope it may bring some sort of vibe in the hospitality industry that was in serious jeopardy following COVID 19 & internal unrest in Ethiopia. Still a lot has to be done with regard to ensuring Peace and security for tourism& hospitality industry to flourish. Unless the resultant economic downturn, unemployment and related socio economic chaos would be catastrophic. The discussion was held recently between the new Minister of Tourism and potential partners of the sector. It was mainly focused on opportunities for cooperation, challenges of the sector, and other untapped potential that could make Ethiopia a major destination for no reasons. Tourism Minister, Selamawit Kassa, has emphasized the government's commitment to make MICE Industry to develop so as the sector benefits better and contribute to bring more revenues to Ethiopia's economy. The representatives of the organizations shared their overall understanding of the needs of the industry and raised matters of challenges & comparative advantage to be competitive globally in Africa. Minister Selamawit said that her ministry is committed to building Ethiopia's image internationally by preparing guidelines and implementing policies that encourage the growth of the sector. To sum up, she reiterated to the discussants that it's necessary to strengthen partnership by creating a regular relationship having continuum sessions.

The success of any property business in Phuket hinges on accurately forecasting demand, which in turn means understanding Phuket's tourism dynamics. This might be a challenge for a new player in the field. Let's take the recent Chinese New Year celebrations. Local media outlets in Phuket announced that "nearly 50,000 passengers were expected to arrive in Phuket during Feb 4-16." Quick check through the TAT database, reveals that international passenger arrivals at Phuket airport ranged between 17,198 and 20,459 people per day. And paradoxically, this rather confirms than defies the initial forecast. The absolutely wrong news reports were bases on the absolutely correct announcement by Phuket Airport, which expected to service 49,000 passengers daily from Feb 4-16. This figure actually represented an approximate split of 24,500 arrivals and 24,500 departures. After adjusting for Thai nationals arriving on international flights and adding foreign arrivals on domestic flights, the numbers indeed align. The next question to consider is whether the current traffic through Phuket airport is really as big as reported in the media. Cannot there be one mistake upon another? Nearly 50,000 people look like a huge the crowd exceeding the capacity of Stamford Bridge Stadium, the home of Chelsea. But is this a significant number for Phuket Airport? I'll provide some perspective in my next post.
