Some special education experts say the 2004 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act — signed by President George W. Bush 20 years ago today — was well designed, and they have no desire for another reauthorization anytime soon. However, they also said that underfunding and teacher shortages are making IDEA implementation challenging. In this deep dive, we take a look back to see how the 2004 reauthorization changed special education services — and a look ahead at ways some hope IDEA could be improved. #SpecialEducation #StudentsWithDisabilties #IDEA

What Is IDEA and Why Does It Matter? 🌟 The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the cornerstone of special education law in the U.S., offering protections and rights for kids with disabilities from birth to age 21. It ensures they receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), alongside their peers whenever possible. 🛠 Key Features of IDEA: ✅ Child Find: Schools must identify and evaluate kids with potential disabilities, at no cost to families. ✅ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs): Tailored services to help students thrive. ✅ Parental Voice: Parents have rights and safeguards throughout the process. IDEA extends its support to public, charter, and magnet schools — and even offers early intervention for children under age 3. 🔑 Understanding IDEA is the first step toward advocating for your child’s success. Let’s support every learner’s journey! #SpecialEducation #IDEA #ParentAdvocacy #EducationRights #ParentalGuidance #BallouEducation

Check out this new interview from American Institutes for Research and NPR about the anniversary of IDEA
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (#IDEA), a landmark federal law that guarantees all children with disabilities the right to a free public education. The law also promised to provide schools with "up to 40%" of the associated costs of special education, a goal which has never been met in the law's 50-year history. Today, these costs are becoming a crisis for schools, with the federal government only covering around 10% of what's needed to support the 8 million children who receive special education services in school. On NPR's All Things Considered, AIR #SpecialEducation funding expert Tammy Kolbe joins Ed Martin, a speech therapy professor instrumental in drafting the bill that was signed into law as IDEA in 1975, to reflect on the challenges of funding special education, 50 years of IDEA, and what it would take for things to finally change.

“The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) says students with disabilities should be educated in the "least restrictive environment," meaning they should be taught in the general education setting for the maximum amount of time possible with the necessary support to help them learn. The goal driven by federal policy is 80% of the day in a general education setting.” https://lnkd.in/ecF9bfWv

There are a record number of students with disabilities in the nation’s schools. New data shows that there were 7.5 million children ages 3 to 21 served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act during the 2022-2023 school year, accounting for 15% of all students. That’s a jump from 7.3 million the year prior and represents the highest number ever. #customsolutions #inclusivetteachingpractices #enhancededucation #education #educationexperts #iep #scts #ieptraining #educators #professionaldevelopment #classroombenefits #teachers #schooldistricts #independenteducationplan #trainingcourse #strategiccalibrationtrainingsystems #scts

An interesting article at a time when we are constantly talking about how research should back up everything we do. Inclusion isn't easy, and this article makes this clear yet again. At the heart of the matter is that students must get the support they need, and when we use the multi-tiered systems of support we will be able to get them the support they need. Sometimes, we need to be "brave"as Brene Brown says, to do the right thing because systems can stand in the way.
Very interesting article in which Jill Barshay interviews Douglas Fuchs who has been researching inclusion and the evidence (or lack of it) supporting the concept of 'full' inclusion. From the article: “Some number of kids with disabilities can and should be in general classrooms,” Fuchs said. “It’s manifestly obvious that they’re doing reasonably well. They should stay there. But for a majority, they need intensive instruction, and we know how to provide intensive instruction. The evidence is, I dare say, overwhelming.” https://lnkd.in/gVSTz2hm
