“ODDS & ENDS”, acrylics on (12) 20”X20” panels, 60”x80” overall framed, 2014. This original painting was inspired by the colors and fullness of the forest floor. Relishing the highly chromatic colors offered by acrylic, the colors are exaggerated and pushed to the limit. In these all-overpaintings, the surfaces are covered from edge to edge and from corner to corner. Your eyes are invited to wander the panel everywhere, to follow the lines, shapes, and values. Each area of the composition is given equal attention and significance. Dispensers were used to apply thick pure hues in a pointillistic style on the panel. From up close, the haphazard stokes are abstract and become more realistic from a distance, reminiscent of impressionism. www.gregnavratilart.com #art #painting #originalart #fineart #colorfulart #absractrealism #pointillism#alloverart #artwork #paintingwithoutbrushes #artcollections #artbuyers #nature #availableart #pnwart #autumnleaves #nature #naturalareas #landscapepainting #underfoot #wetlands #coast #forests #rivers #waterfalls #gregnavratilart

A-Z: Fine art | fīn ärt | noun | Traditionally, “fine art” or “high art” refers to purely aesthetic works of art, as opposed to “decorative art,” “applied art,” or “craft,” which is designed to be both aesthetic and functional. Pointedly, “fine art” does not need to have a use or a purpose beyond aesthetics. The distinctions between different types of art are arbitrary and have changed over time. The idea of a “hierarchy of genres” with painting at the top was promoted during the Renaissance, largely by painters. The hierarchy developed further with the rise of art academies, which ranked history painting, portraiture, landscape painting, still life painting, and genre painting (representing everyday life) in that order. Today, the relationship between different art forms and the very distinction between fine and decorative art is being challenged. impasto, paint that is applied to a canvas or panel in quantities that make it stand out from the surface. Impasto was used frequently to mimic the broken-textured quality of highlights i.e., the surfaces of objects that are struck by an intense light. Impasto came into its own in the 17th century, when such Baroque painters as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Diego Velázquez used skillfully and minutely worked impastos to depict lined and wrinkled skin or the sparkle of elaborately crafted armour, jewelry, and rich fabrics. The 19th-century painter Vincent van Gogh made notable use of impastos, building up and defining the forms in his paintings with thick, nervous dabs of paint. Twentieth-century painters such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning often applied impastos with a dynamism and a gestural bravura that emphasized the physical qualities of the paint itself. Since then, raw pigments applied thickly to a canvas have become a staple technique of modern abstract and semifigurative painting.

“Rest Stop”, acrylics on 36”x60” canvas, 2023. The artwork is a vivid and highly colorful depiction of a natural scene, specifically a forest stream. The rich palette of colors, with dominant reds, purples, blues, and greens, to bring the scene to life. The stream winds through the composition, with visible water reflecting various hues, and fallen branches and logs adding texture and movement. The surrounding foliage is lush and dense, with grasses and leaves in various shades of green, punctuated by splashes of yellow and violet. The overall effect is vibrant and dynamic, giving the scene a surreal and almost otherworldly quality.
