The European Commission has opened a second formal proceedings against TikTok under the Digital Services Act (DSA) raising concerns about new app's role in digital addiction: The investigation focuses on TikTok Lite's recent launch in France and Spain, particularly honing in on the "Task and Reward Program". This feature, allowing users to earn points by engaging in various activities like watching videos and liking content, has raised concerns about its potential addictive effects, especially among minors. Under the DSA, Very Large Online Platforms like TikTok are required to conduct thorough risk assessments before introducing new functionalities with significant systemic impact. However, the Commission suspects that TikTok may have rolled out the Task and Reward Program without adequate evaluation of its potential risks and without implementing effective mitigation measures. Key areas of investigation include: - Compliance with DSA Obligations: Did TikTok fulfill its obligation to submit a risk assessment report before launching the Task and Reward Program, considering its potential negative impact on mental health, especially among minors? - Risk Mitigation Measures: What steps did TikTok take to address the risks associated with the Task and Reward Program, particularly in terms of addictive behavior and mental health concerns?

Construction workers are dying by suicide at an alarming rate (nbcnews.com) Suicide wasn’t in my vocabulary until it became personal. My cousin died by suicide at 26. With all of his successes no one was aware of the pain he masked. This was my motivation to become a crisis counselor for a suicide hotline. While I no longer do this work, I am still passionate about raising awareness. I recently read about the alarmingly high rates of suicide among construction workers—significantly higher than many other professions. The pressures in this industry have intensified recently due to a combination of factors: long hours, a persistent shortage of skilled workers, exceedingly tight deadlines, and ongoing safety issues. These challenges not only increase physical demands but also significantly impact mental health. This revelation is a call to action for all of us to vigilantly support the mental well-being of our workers, peers, and loved ones. Here are some critical signs we should all be aware of, which might indicate someone is struggling: 1. Changes in Behavior: Look for alterations in how someone typically acts, such as increased irritability, moodiness, or withdrawal from social interactions. 2. Physical Symptoms: Signs of fatigue, mentioning persistent sleep disturbances, or displaying a significant weight change can be indicators of stress or depression. 3. Decreased Job Performance: A sudden drop in quality of work, increased accidents, or inability to concentrate can reflect larger issues. 4. Expressed Feelings of Hopelessness: Pay attention if someone frequently talks about unbearable feelings, sees no way out of problems, or discusses not being around in the future. 5. Increased Alcohol or Drug Use: This can be a sign of trying to cope with stress, anxiety, or depression. Awareness and open conversations about mental health can save lives. Let’s commit to being there for one another, to listen without judgment and support without hesitation. If you see these signs, reach out. Sometimes, a simple conversation can make all the difference. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. You can also call the network previously known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, at 800-273-8255, text HOME to 741741 or visit https://lnkd.in/edXkrTV6 for additional resources. #MentalHealthAwareness #SupportEachOther
