One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was that "ideas are cheap." They come all the time - what matters is which ones you decide to pursue. The Mercedes Formula 1 team learned this the hard way with their "zero pod" concept, which impressed everyone during the 2022 pre-season testing. Despite its promise to reduce drag and improve aerodynamics, the design struggled with downforce, porpoising, and cooling issues, leading to a significant drop in championship performance. Towards the end of the 2022 season, several podiums and one race win encouraged Mercedes to stick with the concept for another year, only to realize in 2023 that the zero pod concept would never produce a championship-winning car. Mercedes eventually shifted to a more conventional design in 2024, already achieving two race wins and nine podiums by mid-season. Just because an idea is bold and innovative it doesn’t mean it will produce results. Sometimes, pursuing more traditional ideas can be a far more competitive approach.

Recently I saw the movie Gran Turismo It’s a beautiful move about Jann Mardenborough a simulator (sim) game player who goes on to become a real race car driver and even thrive in the real racing World Some really inspiring stuff was shown as Jann successfully navigated through the ups and downs with the help of his coach and ultimately succeeds But what amazed me most was the visionary thought process of Nissan’s marketing executive Danny Moore He noticed the untapped potential that is represented by the players of the simulation game And saw a brilliant opportunity to convert the best sim-car race drivers into winning real race car drivers Win win for both the players and Nissan who would not only benefit from the immense PR the exercise would generate But also perhaps help them find a potentially winning race car driver who they don’t have to train from zero Another amazing thing that I noticed was how closely the simulation game resembled the actual racing experience From the configuration of the cars, to driving to the racing tracks - everything was carefully mimicked and simulated in the game The accuracy is astounding that it actually gave the sim game driver a definitive edge over the actual race car driver Wonder who the Product manager behind the game was - hats off to him for the in depth market research and accurate specs Any other movie which inspires you to become a better PM?
