What if there is a public holiday between your office leaves? How does your company treat that? Treat it as a holiday and not include in your leaves. Or since you applied for leaves for a particular period, the whole period will be counted as your leaves.

This became a big issue in one office I've worked in. There was no air con. Windows couldn't be opened and there was no air flow. There were hundreds of monitors and computers generating heat. There were many bodies in the room generating heat. Dress code was smart. It was incredibly uncomfortable for everyone, so some of us decided to place thermometers around the office and we recorded nearly 30 degrees - it was cooler outside! Response when we escalated it? "There is no maximum temperature that a workplace can be to make it unsafe." No risk assessments were done and no adjustments were made. As a result, we were still expected to go into work every day, smartly dressed, and be productive. Guess how morale was in that workplace? Nice mention of Kudoboard in the WSJ yesterday. As companies move to remote, hybrid, distributed teams, the office birthday party is slowly dying. And good riddance. Let's be real, who really has fond memories of listening to their coworkers sing "Happy Birthday" in a conference room? Personally, I prefer work anniversary celebrations over birthday celebrations at work anyway. A work anniversary is a great time to come together as a team and celebrate a person's contributions. It allows a more genuine outpouring of gratitude than a birthday. Plus it's more inclusive. What do you think? Office birthday parties or nah? Remember office birthday parties? Everybody yelling, “Surprise!” in the conference room? Or crowding around your desk to sing “Happy Birthday”? Well, say goodbye to all that. For a lot of people, office birthdays raise conflicting feelings. They like having their birthdays remembered but hate parties—acknowledgment, just not with a big production. Many companies are trying to square that circle by simply sending people digital notes or gift cards for their birthday. Some companies are trying to make office celebrations more palatable by cheering work anniversaries instead of birthdays. Employers say people are a lot less likely to feel sensitive about their years of service than their age, and can feel acknowledged for their loyalty and service. Twitch’s chief people officer, Lauren Nunes, agrees that birthdays have “lost their luster” in favor of work anniversaries. Last year Twitch held a companywide video stream where employees, both remote and in person, wore crowns with their years of service written on them. The company held a Twitch trivia game and a competition to build the best birthday cake out of children’s modeling clay.
