🌠 Are we living on borrowed time? As we strive for progress and innovation, have we considered the true cost of our actions on Earth? In this eye-opening video, we explore the concept of planetary boundaries—the critical thresholds we must respect to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. What Are Planetary Boundaries? Planetary boundaries are limits we should not cross if we want to keep our planet healthy. They cover important things like climate change, loss of animals and plants, and water use. Why Do They Matter? These boundaries are crucial for our survival. If we go beyond them, we risk serious problems for our environment, our health, and future generations. Understanding these limits can help us make better choices for a sustainable life. Watch the Video to Learn More About: The nine boundaries we should know How they connect with each other Simple steps we can take to protect our planet Join the Conversation! What do you think we can do to respect these boundaries? Share your thoughts in the comments! Let’s support each other in taking care of our Earth.

An incredibly important (and unusually clear) explanation of were we're heading in climate terms. The question for #financialmarkets is 'How do you price a scenario (+3.1 deg C) that last applied more than 3 million years ago?' The answer is: we can't. Current market valuations are predicated on the assumption that the future will be similar to the past. We are rapidly approaching the point where that assumption will demonstrably no longer hold.
Must watch 🌍 Johan Rockström explains the concept of the "corridor of life" at the Stockholm Resilience Centre International #AdvisoryBoard meeting. Our modern world has developed within a stable climate, with an average temperature of approx. 14°C, fluctuating by only ±0.5°C. In the past 3 million years, Earth has NEVER exceeded +2°C above pre-industrial levels. There's no evidence that our planet can support 9 billion people with dignity outside this corridor. Avoiding runaway climate change depends on returning to the Safe Operating Space of all Planetary Boundaries—6 out of 9 are already breached (the #foodsystem being the single biggest culprit). In other words; we're heading full steam toward destabilizing the systems that have allowed humanity to flourish. The recent #PlanetaryHealthCheck report offers not only a health check of our planet, but a roadmap for navigating the complex challenges of the Anthropocene and securing a future where humanity thrives within Earth's safe limits. We are exceeding boundaries that have yet to be crossed in global temperature averages, (Global Mean Temperature,) for the first time in 3-million years. Mean temps are moderated by ocean surface temperatures, while equating to some 8 degrees above average on land. All of this newly trapped heat fuels tropical storms and droughts alike, but most importantly, increases polar ice melt that exarcebates heating known as a feedback loop, or tipping point. Storms that are happening today have greater energy than ever before, enabling moisture to remain aloft until dropped or “firehosing” like Western North Carolina recently experienced. These types of events could not have occurred in human history prior to today because of the energy existing in the atmosphere, directly correlating to CO2 levels from burning fossil-fuels.

Why is it urgent to replace fossil usage with circular and renewable alternatives? Because humans will have it hard to survive outside “the corridor of life” as Johan Rockström puts it. We have a three M year reference on where we flourish (inside corridor) and where we don’t (outside)

Last week Katherine Richardson, Johan Rockström and colleagues published a stock take of applications, and societal and policy impacts of the Planetary Boundaries. The original publication and subsequent updates are three of ten most cited scientific papers in global policy documents! The growing mainstream adoption of the PBs underscores their critical relevance to businesses. The team at the Planetary Accounting Network’s were pleased to see our approach recognized, with Planetary Accounting cited as the example of a mechanism for equitably sharing global ecological resources. To support #COP29 discussions, we've distilled this latest article into a concise 5-minute summary—a quick read to stay informed and ahead of the curve. #PlanetaryBoundaries #Sustainability #ClimateAction #COP29 #BusinessStrategy #GlobalPolicy #PlanetaryAccounting

“ 6 out of 9 planetary boundaries are already breached. The #foodsystem being the single biggest culprit. In other words, we're heading full steam toward destabilizing the systems that have allowed humanity to flourish. “ As others have been saying for years, food production, distribution and consumption systems are broken. Producers and the supply chain (that have options to do things differently) are more to blame than consumers (with limited choices and budgets). Ten global corporates control the majority of the world’s food systems. However, short term financial greed takes precedence over planetary well-being and human health. Can we change things? Yes - where there’s a will, there’s a way.
