Last November, Report on Business magazine brought you a package called "This is what economic reconciliation looks like," about why Canada's future growth depends on economic parity between Indigenous peoples and the rest of Canada. We promised to continue the conversation—and we have, in our April issue. On the cover is an excellently told tale by Jason Kirby about how seven Mi'kmaq bands, led by Chief Terry Paul, came together to buy half of Clearwater Seafood. Now, it's charting a new course as an Indigenous-owned company, bringing together seven-generation thinking and a push for profitability that will mean economic prosperity for the communities that were part of the deal. Fiji's abysmal growth outlook of 2.8% is evidence that a nation cannot tax its way into prosperity. Solving for greater Economic Freedom is how you build the foundations for robust economic growth. What does that mean? Lower taxes, smarter/leaner regulatory burden, unlimited competition (to lower costs), and zero corruption. If the goal is human progress, then ALL policy decisions need to be evaluated through the Economic Freedom lens. Suffocating Economic Freedom and then wondering why you cannot sustain robust growth is the definition of insanity.
