Swiss scale-up Bcomp Ltd’s high-performance components, which are made from natural flax fibers, enable substantial weight and #Co2 emission reductions compared to standard materials. Applications range from Formula 1 and #automotive to #aerospace. Investors in the company, which on April 16 announced a $40 million series C funding round, include BMW i Ventures, Volvo Cars Tech Fund and Porsche Ventures, as well as Airbus Ventures, Generali, and existing investors. Bcomp’s #circular, #naturalfibers composite promises to replace #carbonfibers, #glassfibers and #petrochemical-based #plastic parts, used to make everything from door handles to seatbacks, a small but important part of the journey to greener #mobility. “Our purpose is to #decarbonize with our #biobased materials,” says Bcomp CEO Christian Fischer. Bcomp is active in the automotive and mobility, motorsports, marine and sports sectors. Its proprietary reinforcement technologies ampliTex and powerRibs are used for making light and stiff composites that enable reduction of the environmental impact of products. While Bcomp’s primary focus in on the automotive sector it is already well-advanced in its effort to target the aviation sector. It has developed a solution that passes the fire retardancy and heat generation tests needed to adhere to tough aviation safety requirements. “It took us years to manage these aspects,” says Fischer. Now that it has cracked these challenges the company can branch out into aviation and other types of mass transportation, he says. Eventually he expects the material to be used in consumer electronics. https://lnkd.in/gYxFFUZb

Another one bites the dust, as Arrival joins the long list of EV startups that have failed to scale-up, “(recently) including truckmaker Volta Trucks and battery group Proterra Inc, as newer entrants find themselves unable to raise capital amid higher interest rates and greater scepticism over their often-unprofitable businesses". Particularly in Europe, as UBS' analysts note, this leaves, "No local European disruptor companies, just legacy OEMs transitioning to EV era at more or less moderate speed", despite all time high incentives in the US IRA and similar levels of investment commitments from EU and leading European automotive nation states. Contrasting this with #China context, Financial Times recently featured a brilliant analysis by Yanmei Xie of Gavekal Research. She notes, "Government largesse and protectionism created fertile ground for abuse. Myriad companies emerged, churning out low-cost, low-tech vehicles with little appeal to consumers." However, "the Chinese government is familiar with this malaise and skilled at treating it. It began raising the bar for issuing production licences and withdrawing subsidies in phases. Vehicles with low driving ranges lost support first. The low-tech producers were either barred from entering the market or forced to exit it. Those who withstood both the price-war attrition and the government-engineered culling became ruthlessly efficient." More recently during much of 2023, the Chinese government has gone on to limit EV production licenses for tech giants like DiDi, Baidu, Inc. and Xiaomi Technology, pushing them to build stronger alliances with legacy automotive (for the production) and focus on (their core strengths in) software and digital capabilities, instead. The Chinese case, "can be staggeringly wasteful but still produce stunning results." Particularly, "cutting support and introducing market discipline to weed out the weak has already produced domestic and export juggernauts in steel, shipbuilding and solar panels." The key here being the state's role in not only incentivising the industries of future, but also discipling market failures (proverbial stick to the carrot). In the more market-driven economies of the west and similar (e.g. India) it will still be important to build greater accountability around subsidies, production and demand side incentives. Legacy automotive - having enjoyed generations of state funding - will have to also play an active role through M&As and EV production scaling at quality, cost and time, per the ambitious environmental policy targets. Finally the public policy will have to bring greater clarity, predictability and focus for the new-incumbents/resurgents to challenge the, "formidable rivals". STAX Engineering provides mobile emissions capture and control technology for ports, shipping terminals, and fleet operators. Their patented exhaust capture system attaches to at-berth vessels without any modifications, even in the most congested ports. Once the exhaust is captured, it is filtered, removing 99% of particulate matter (PM) and 95% of oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Importantly, STAX's technology does not produce hazardous waste when processing vessel emissions. This system enables all vessels, including tankers, to comply with the highest air quality standards while operating safely. @Michael Walker | Dr. John Holmes (CAPT, USCG, ret.) | Jaimi Klein #NUSEnterprise #NUS #Innovation #Entrepreneurship #PIER71 #maritimereimagined #ideate #impact #transform #MaritimeInnovation #SingaporeTech #DigitalTransformation #FutureofMaritime #MaritimeSG #IndustryTransformation #Entrepreneurship #Shipping #Tech #Sustainability #Decarbonisation #supplychainresilience #smartport #smartship #smartmaritimeservices #crewsafety #MarineTech #SmartPortChallenge #SPC2024 #accelerate Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) | Eng Dih Teo, Kenneth Lim, Thomas Ting, Yi Han Ng (黄翼航), Tay Rick Im Desmond, Sin Yee LOH 罗欣怡, Zi Hua Samuel Soo, Sharine Tan, Ian Ho, Jessica Chow, Gwen Chen NUS Enterprise | Tsuhan Chen, Benjamin C.K. "Startup Spotlight: Zemission – Tackling the Challenges of Electric Trucks with Innovative Heating Technology Zemission, a Lund-based company is making strides in solving a major issue facing electric trucks: the reduced range caused by heating the cabin and battery in colder weather. Founded by Anders Vestin, Zemission’s technology uses a catalytic combustion process powered by ethanol or biodiesel, offering a more efficient way to keep trucks warm without draining the battery. This solution can extend the truck’s range by up to 25%, reducing the need for larger, heavier batteries." Read more in the link in the comments Zemission AB #skanestartups #cleantech #evtrucks

Thrilled to be featured in Global Corporate Venturing this month about our growth in Korea, the U.S., and into Germany, Hungary and the rest of Europe. Edison F. spoke with Glassdome Chief Business Officer Jinki Ham about our Product Carbon Footprint and Continuous Improvement platforms. "Companies in the European Union, especially those working with automotive original equipment manufacturers, must comply with regulations like the EU Battery Directive and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. Under these directives, EU companies are required to calculate their product carbon footprint (PCF), measuring greenhouse gas emissions associated with the lifecycle of a product from raw material extraction to disposal. Glassdome also provides a continuous improvement (CI) platform that extracts data in real time from machines and production processes." https://lnkd.in/ewrXzK9A #productcarbonfootprint #continuousimprovement #cbam #pcf #glassdome
