E Ola! is KS' Curricular Framework, or set of learner outcomes grounded in kuana ʻike Hawaiʻi (Native Hawaiian perspectives), and our enterprise-wide identity. To help employees understand E Ola! and how we should be applying it in our daily work, the Legal/HR group planned Lunch & Learn sessions to "unpack", or dig into, the outcomes which are the Learners' Strong Foundation. Today we talked about kūpono, which in the context of E Ola! is defined as "honorable character founded on Hawaiian and Christian values". Employees and haumāna (students) are encouraged to uphold kūpono through actions such as extending aloha to others, taking responsibility for their actions, caring for others and themselves, and making ethical decisions. We shared examples of how we practice (either regularly or recently) kūpono by cooking for our ʻohana, bringing a meal to an elderly neighbor, having compassion for others, or simply by being kind to a stranger. The "Law of the Splintered Paddle" is a famous story about Kamehameha ʻEkahi which can be related to the principle of kūpono. I feel pretty privileged to be able to say that I learned some of these things at my schools - science 🤓, first aid ⛑️, economics 📈 and (although “un-learning” capitalism came much later), and even low-carbon living, but other things I would add to this list of things I wish I learned at school would be: personal finance and finance management, law, activism (especially how to organize safely, intelligently, and responsibly), woodworking / other crafts that enable one’s creativity and skill to work with one’s own hands. What would you add to this list?
What should they teach us in school? I was watching my little four year old neighbour yesterday identify plants that I’ve never heard of as she walked barefoot through the forest. I’ve got a few mates who were like her, who grew up learning the things that the rest of us are scrambling to learn as adults. And I know lots of kids like her, who teach me so much about the world around us even though they’re a fraction of my age. Another five year old friend can count in Indonesian and Noongar. Amazing. The exciting part is that learning is a lifelong journey, and generally the more recently we’ve learned something, the better we are at explaining it to others, because we remember what it’s like to not know that thing. I’m all about lifelong learning, and when I’m president of the world everyone will have the opportunity to learn the important stuff, no matter what age they are. What do you wish you'd learned as a kid? #artwithpurpose #artasactivism #brennaquinlan

Language keeps Martu strong, and keeping language strong means passing it down to the next generation. 💬💪 Our language team has created resources to support caregivers in our Wantikajaku Jijikajaku (For Women and Families) Program. These resources aim to strengthen jiji (children's) proficiency in Martu Wangka (language) and their connection to culture through engaging activities and introducing them to new words that may not come up in everyday conversations. 🗣️ The language resources developed are also used in other KJ programs and distributed to community schools and other organisations within the communities. Martu identify the resources they want to use, and the drafts are tested with Martu Elders and emerging leaders to get feedback. This process gives Elders an opportunity to teach younger generations important wangka ninti (language knowledge).💡 📷s: (l-r) Azira, Gaston and Timera learn Martu Wankga using KJ language resources. #KeepIndigenousLanguagesStrong #MartuWangka #CulturalKnowledge #IntergenerationalLearning #GrowingMinds #EarlyYearsEducation #TwoWayLearning #LittleVoicesLoudFutures #IntergenerationalKnowledgeTransfer #WantikajakuJijikajaku #WomenAndFamiliesProgram #StrongIndigenousCommunities

Scared of f**king it up when it comes to tikanga Māori? Join the club. We are only one individual finding our way, building our cultural competence so we can contribute more to our multi-cultural communities and build on our Tiriti relationship. Imagine being the The Warehouse who massively mucked up te reo on the front of one of their notebooks. The greeting that they wanted on the cover was 'kia pai te rā' which means 'have a good day' in English. However, the notebook's cover read 'Kia pia te rā' which translates to 'have a beer day’. Everybody knew about it, not a good look for The Warehouse. But they apologised, got it right and we all moved on. For years, missing macrons meant Weta Workshop was mistakenly named after excrement, rather than the native insect, wētā. By building its knowledge of te ao Māori, including tikanga, te reo Māori and relationships with mana whenua, Wētā is now the spikey insect it was always intended to be. Some will say there is no excuse, but all learners make mistakes. It is those who learn from mistakes that will grow. So how do I grow my cultural confidence. 1. Choose an area you want to learn more about in te ao Māori. 2. Look around for people who can support you with your learning and connect. 3. Start applying it in your life, at work, home, in the community. 4. If you get it a bit wrong, kei te pai. Be appreciate of the help, when someone corrects you. We have all been there and will be again. Follow me if you want to keep learning. #cultural competency #cultural capability #learning Kia ora, I’m Lisa Heald. I help you to ‘cross the chasm’, turning cultural competence into capability. Walk with me to inspire and enable others to build strong cultures that respect our peoples.
