Two common options are aluminum spacers and warm edge spacers, each with distinct characteristics. **Aluminum Spacers:** Aluminum spacers have been widely used for decades due to their durability and structural strength. However, aluminum is a highly conductive material, which leads to greater heat transfer at the edges of the glass. This high conductivity results in increased thermal bridging, which negatively impacts the U-value of the IGU, contributing to higher energy consumption and reduced comfort in buildings. **Warm Edge Spacers:** In contrast, warm edge spacers are made from materials with low thermal conductivity, such as stainless steel, composite plastics, or rubber. These materials significantly reduce heat transfer at the glass boundaries, improving the U-value of the IGU. This reduction in thermal bridging leads to better energy efficiency, lower heating and cooling costs, and improved indoor comfort. **Advantages and Disadvantages:** - **Aluminum Spacers:** - *Advantages:* Strong, durable, widely available. - *Disadvantages:* High thermal conductivity, poor energy efficiency, potential for condensation at edges. - **Warm Edge Spacers:** - *Advantages:* Low thermal conductivity, improved U-value, enhanced energy savings, reduced condensation risk. - *Disadvantages:* Generally more expensive, may have lower structural strength compared to aluminum.
