The European Union has strengthened support for the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation. It has published additional guidance and proposes an extra 12 months for phasing-in, in response to feedback from global partners and stakeholders. 🌱 This proposal, if approved by the European Parliament and the Council to extend the law’s applicability to 30 December 2025 for large companies and 30 June 2026 for micro- and small enterprises ensure proper and effective implementation. The guidance provides clarity on key elements such as definitions, penalties, and the new Information System for due diligence statements. To help ensure smooth implementation worldwide, the European Union is presenting a strategic framework for international cooperation engagement on the EU Deforestation Regulation. In conjunction with this comprehensive framework, the EU will step up dialogue and support even further. Happy #WorldEnvironmentDay!! Did you know that the Eastern Partnership countries have some of the most unique ecosystems on Earth? From the great Pinsk wetlands straddling the Belarus-Ukraine border to the glaciers of the Caucasus the region hosts a multitude of diverse flora and fauna. Sadly, they face an unprecedented change in climate change. Building resilience, fighting against environmental degradation and advocating for better legislation is needed to preserve a rich, liveable environment. At the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum, we partner up with local civil society to monitor the progress of EaP governments in protecting the environment. The EaP CSF Index shows limited progress in that front. Much remains to be done and civil society must play a role! Civil Society can train local and national authorities on climate adaptation and mitigation and participate in environmental project assessments. A deal is a deal 🌎

Marine governance needs to evolve if we are to achieve climate objectives under the European Green Deal. But how do we move forward with this improvement given EGD’s complex, onion-like structure and intricate connections to land-based activities 🤔💭 Knowledge is power as they say, so the first step is to try and understand which EGD policies have a bearing on marine governance 📃➡🌊 This task kept us busy for more than a year so we are really excited to share the results! In this report, we remove EGD’s complexity layer by layer, breaking it down into 3 constituent parts: EGD elements, high-level strategies, and implementing and supporting policies.   The report in numbers 🐋 Marine life: 7️⃣ policies mapped 🥤 Marine plastic: 1️⃣0️⃣ policies mapped ⚡ Marine energy: 6️⃣ policies mapped 🛳 Maritime transport: 1️⃣4️⃣ policies mapped 🔀 Cross-cutting priorities: 7️⃣ policies mapped   In addition, we reviewed known institutional barriers and attributes (actor eligibility, responsibility, control, social connectivity, conflict, social learning, accountability) to indicate how these can manifest themselves in the reviewed policies.   That’s a real treasure trove of information. Did you know the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum also works with #civilsociety on monitoring the progress of EaP countries on #environment and #climate? The latest edition of our #EaPIndex shows limited progress on this front.    Today’s #EarthDay takes place against the backdrop of one of the most dramatic #ecocides in history. Russia’s war of aggression has a direct impact on Ukrainian environment and waterways, notably with the destruction in June 2023 of the Nova Kakhovka Dam on the Dnieper River.   Looking across the 6 Eastern Partnership countries, Armenia did make progress with legislative progress on bringing forth alternative energies and measures for energy conservation and efficiency. Nevertheless, much remains to be done and civil society must play a role!   At the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum, we believe:   Civil Society can train local and national authorities on climate adaptation and mitigation and participate in environmental project assessments, Civil Society can work with local authorities to fully enforce the Aarhus Convention which guarantees every person’s right to live in a healthy environment.
