Today let's take a look at another #Edtech success story 💎 Founded by Stanford University computer science professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller 12 years ago, #Coursera has grown from a small experiment into a massive enterprise. Here are the key Coursera metrics: ⤵ 🔹 annual revenue reached $635.83 million in 2023, 🔹 Coursera has attracted a vast global audience, with over 142 million registered learners in 2023, 🔹 the platform offers diverse courses from over 325 leading universities and companies, covering a wide spectrum of subjects. Coursera has achieved remarkable success by overcoming challenges like scaling operations, ensuring quality, and building a sustainable business model. With a focus on innovation and accessibility, Coursera has empowered individuals and organizations to upskill and reskill for the digital age. Today, while reading about Coursera, I asked myself: how can my Edtech startup leverage similar strategies to significantly impact the industry? If you have any suggestions for me and Dodem, don't hesitate to share your thoughts in the comments 🙌🙌🙌

#𝟮𝟭𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗟𝗮𝘄𝘀: 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗮'𝘀 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗔 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 In 2008, the Great Recession cripples economies worldwide. Yet, amidst the financial turmoil, a 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 in the unlikeliest of places: Stanford University. 𝗗𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗻𝗲 𝗞𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘄 𝗡𝗴, technology professors with a radical vision. As tuition costs skyrocketed and knowledge remained locked behind campus gates, they questioned the very foundation of higher education. 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲? Their 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 was to launch a protype, 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 at Stanford itself, to pragmatically test their disruptive model. Within weeks, 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱. This initial 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲. 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱. Partnering with Coursera, felt like a leap into the unknown. 𝗗𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗻𝗲 𝗞𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿, 𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿, 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝘅𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹'𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆. • 𝗨𝗻𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: She believed in Coursera's potential to transform lives. • 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: She understood revolutions take time, not pronouncements. • 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱-𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: She pivoted, addressing universities' concerns with a shared prosperity model. 𝗞𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 the 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. Slowly, partnerships with elite institutions like Princeton and Melbourne University materialized. By 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟮, 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 and 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱. Coursera launched, offering a growing catalogue of AI-powered courses from prestigious universities. The world was ready. The 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗱, 𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆. Then came the 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗜𝗗-𝟭𝟵 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 as campuses shut down/ 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗮, 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 and market value soared to a 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 $𝟱 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻. Daphne Koller's story is a testament to the power of being ready for the moment and grabbing it when it hits. 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗮'𝘀 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁 that resonated with the needs of the world when the time was finally right. #𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗢𝗘𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵

Practical Empathy Startups, especially those designed to improve human outcomes like in edtech, don't exist in a vacuum. Their impact ripples through various stakeholders, making it essential to identify and understand these connections from the outset. A crucial step, and one of our programme's first outputs, is to map out all the people who will experience material change from the startup's existence. This is the first stage of practical empathy; knowing exactly who you're serving. Then the hard work starts!

5 Things - Coursera ($COUR) Beats Estimates and Issues Strong Guidance: DKI Takeaway: In the last year, tutoring/cheating site, Chegg ($CHGG) has seen its stock get cut in half due partly to competition from AI and partly due to its bad reputation among educators. Direct competitor 2U ($TWOU) has seen its stock get obliterated from almost $13 to below $1 in the last year because its business model relies on selling online education at on-campus prices. Coursera has continued to deliver high-end university credentials and company-approved career development at deeply discounted prices. As a result of having a better business model, revenue growth has ranged from 21% to 59% over the past six years. The registered learner base of 142MM people is the largest dedicated learning platform in the world.

If Coursera or Udemy had a child with a DeSci project, it’d look like a perfect DeEd platform 🧑🎓 How such a tandem (or a marriage, in this case) would work in practice? Let’s check the main areas of intersection: 💰 Incentivized Creation & Learning: DeSci’s token rewards for educators resonate with DeEd’s tokenized platforms like Tutellus, fostering a vibrant, knowledge-sharing ecosystem. Such an approach also encourages educators to work on their content a bit harder than before. 💡 Funding Innovation: DeSci’s token-funding capabilities support DeEd’s development of innovative educational tools and micro-schools, driving new approaches to learning. Collecting money for a decentralized health education platform through bio.xyz? Why not! 🔒 Credible Assessments: DeSci enhances the credibility of DeEd certifications, ensuring transparent and trustworthy evaluations in virtual courses. A good example is the microcredentials provided by DoxyChain. 👐 Open Knowledge Access: DeEd remains relatively closed (see Coursera or edX) while the open access to research is one of the main principles of DeSci. That’s why it’s worth looking at platforms such as Bittopia University: Decentralized Autonomous University, the world’s first decentralized university leveraging blockchain, fostering the creation and sharing of open educational resources. 👪 Collaborative Learning: DeSci’s peer review mechanisms align with DeEd’s P2P models, promoting collaborative knowledge creation on platforms like Etica or ResearchHub. 👥 Community-Led Governance: DeSci and DeEd both embrace DAO governance, empowering communities to co-create curricula and resources, as exemplified by Open Campus. And if you’d like to learn more about this unique tandem, have a look at the recent article from Onchain Foundation Magazine prepared by Dr. Ananya Shrivastava: https://lnkd.in/ddTbEaS5
