Globally, mental health in the workplace is a growing concern. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion each year in lost productivity. In the United States alone, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that nearly one in five adults experience mental illness in a given year, impacting their ability to work effectively. Moreover, a survey by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that workplace stress is a significant factor contributing to mental health issues, with around 65% of Americans citing work as a top source of stress. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that employees with depression miss an average of 27 workdays per year, further highlighting the economic impact of mental health challenges in the workplace. Recognizing the importance of addressing mental health concerns, many employers are implementing initiatives such as employee assistance programs (EAPs), mental health training for managers, and flexible work arrangements to support employees' well-being and improve productivity. However, there is still a need for greater awareness, education, and destigmatization of mental health issues in the workplace to create a more supportive and inclusive environment for all employees. With a desire to make an impact and change lives, Josh Painter, Bobbie Dyer, Justin Snyder, and Joshua Adams partnered to create a film that visually told the story of mental health in America."Breakthrough" takes viewers on an emotional journey through the complexities of mental health. Through powerful storytelling and intimate interviews, "Breakthrough" offers a raw and authentic portrayal of the human experience with mental illness, highlighting the importance of understanding, compassion, and support. Penwith Neighbourhood Team today - another cracking session (alas no bunting, more on that soon...). We have a wide range of people making connections across health, care, support and wellbeing in Penwith - including fire service, voluntary sector, local GPs and mental health coaches. We come together every other month, with good food and even better conversation... During today's session we continued exploring "Mary Poppins' bags", each of which contained a complex case study, with all the support and resources we would want to wrap around the person, curated by small multi-disciplinary groups. We had a bit of role play too, to create a bit of challenge and think about the person's voice in all of this. A lot of meaty stuff came out of those conversations and we will dig into that a little deeper next time - things like: how can grow more mutual support - such as linking people who share similar situations (and solutions) together? What's the mechanism to share the plan with the right people, and who are the "right people" anyway? How do we loosen our control, stop trying to fix, and REALLY LISTEN?

This week is World Well-being Week, a movement which promotes time to reflect on, and encourage, well-being in every aspect of our lives. You may be thinking that, since the pandemic, well-being has rarely been far from the headlines, especially in relation to mental health. We, though, wanted to focus on another aspect of well-being: financial well-being. That is the feeling of being in control and comfortable with your finances. As #MentalHealthWeek approaches, with the theme of #Compassion Connects this year, let's reflect on the profound impact of compassion in our lives and communities. But first, what is compassion? It's been called the secret to well-being, as it releases the "love hormone" into our bloodstream, providing a rush of pleasure, especially when we extend compassion to others. Here are some benefits of giving compassion: - Reduces Depression: Showing compassion through caring can positively impact our emotional state, offering relief from depression. - Spikes Happiness: The act of giving compassion is closely linked to the release of oxytocin, a feel-good hormone that boosts happiness. - Creates A Cascade of Kindness: Witnessing acts of compassion can inspire others to show compassion too, creating a ripple effect of kindness. - Promotes Selfless Satisfaction: Studies have shown that the more we give to others, whether monetarily or through volunteering, the greater the emotional reward we experience. With these benefits in mind, Let's take inspiration from the ‘#JustSayHello” campaign initiated last year, which aimed to combat the epidemic of loneliness among the unhoused community. As we move forward, let's broaden the scope of this campaign to include everyone in our communities. Say “Hello” to someone in your community, look them in the eyes, and create connections to show your neighbors that you care.
