I am thrilled to announce the publication of my doctoral research Laboratory-based article Open Access in Environmental Processes. I extend my sincere gratitude to my supervisors, Dr. Edoardo Bertone and Professor Rodney Stewart. I would also express thanks to Associate Professor Helen Stratton, Professor Qin Li, and Dr. Dechao Chen, who are also co-authors of this study. This paper would not have been possible without their valuable insights and guidance. This research's laboratory experiments compared the growth, concentrations, and related fluorescence signatures of E. coli, enterococci, and indole produced under different media and L-tryptophan addition scenarios. The results are promising in relation to the development of a remote, in situ Faecal Indicator Bacteria (FIB) monitoring tool. While monitoring only the E. coli fluorescence region would offer poor selectivity, concurrently monitoring the fluorescence region for indole would exclude non-bacterial contamination events. At the same time, higher selectivity in relation to faecal contamination could be achieved by combining simple site-specific assessments and calibration, additional sensors, and/or fluorescence signal variation analysis. https://lnkd.in/g7YRDcMQ

Yesterday I received an invitation from BioArt, a popular Chinese biomedical research news bulletin platform, to submit a promotional report piece summarize my recent paper. I feel even more proud accomplishing this, since this is the first Chinese essay I wrote after I left China when I was 10 years old! I had fun learning the Chinese vocabulary for specific biology terms (e.g CDKs, cyclins, mitosis, spindles, kinetochores, microtubules etc) from Google search. Of course I received helpful edits from colleagues and friends Tianpeng Zhang and Rui Zhou. For those who can read Chinese, enjoy! https://lnkd.in/e4nD8Xh5

Please check my first research paper in Life Science Alliance Titled: Synaptobrevin2 monomers and dimers differentially engage to regulate the functional trans-SNARE assembly. This paper discusses how the Synaptobrevin-2 monomer/dimer population behaves differentially during vesicular exocytosis and how their population is regulated inside the cell. https://lnkd.in/gNSkDWxH

I am delighted to share my latest scientific paper in the Water Research journal! 💧 Title 📜: The effect of temperature on fouling in anaerobic membrane bioreactor: SMP- and EPS-membrane interactions Co-authors: Amit Grossman, Ashraf Al Ashhab, Ibrahim Al-Sharabati, Roy Bernstein, and Moshe Herzberg. This study compares the performance of an AnMBR operated at 35 °C and 25 °C. Our findings highlight the crucial role of temperature on EPS adhesion and viscoelastic properties, influencing membrane fouling behavior. Through QCM-D analysis, we revealed that EPS at 25 °C is more adhesive yet less viscous and elastic—thus reducing floc integrity and possibly increasing EPS penetration into the membrane surface and pores. CLSM and OCT microscopy analysis of the biofilm layer's structure and composition corroborated the QCM-D analysis. Finally, analysis of the microbial community structures reveals temperature's effects on microbial richness, diversity, and abundance, which likely influence the observed EPS properties and consequent AnMBR fouling. 🚀 Exciting News! Our latest study, "Assessing the functional roles of coevolving PHD finger residues," has been published! 🎉 Paper: https://lnkd.in/gDwzHcee 🔍 Study Overview: We investigated how coevolving residues within the PHD finger module influence protein folding and stability. By combining experimental techniques such as proteolysis and thermal unfolding with computational methods, we uncovered distinct contributions of these residues across different PHD finger subtypes. Our findings offer new insights into protein function and pave the way for deeper understanding in similar protein families.

My third article in 2024 was accepted by ACS Nano - a flagship journal of the American Chemical Society. The article crowns my research at the Vollmer Lab (vollmerlab.com) in Exeter, conducted in cooperation with the rising star of biochemistry, big talent Matthew Houghton. In brief - the manuscript reveals a new mechanism of single-molecule detection with optical microresonators; we coined it thermo-optoplasmonic or simply TOP sensing. It helps not only to detect single molecules but also to get info about their absorption, i.e. single-molecule absorption spectrometer suggested! Manuscript: https://lnkd.in/euDnDc2c 🎆 🎆 🎆
