Most people’s understanding of addiction is wrong. Addiction is about poverty. It’s about trauma. It’s about children not being kept safe when they should have been. It’s about discrimination of already marginalised people. For many, it’s an adaptive response to the horrors of what life has served them. When people who want help for their alcohol and drug use come to First Step, we welcome them with love and care. And then wrap around them a team of GPs, nurses, psychologists, psycho-social workers, nurse practitioners, case workers, mental health nurses and lawyers. One team. For free. At one site. We are the only service of this kind in Australia, however receive NO state government funding for the delivery of our health service. Today is our annual fundraising day and three big-hearted donors are going to match every donation that comes in today.
