How much clearer can this be put: ROTE RECOLLECTION OF INFORMATION IS NOT LEARNING *Knowledge* is not developed this way. Knowledge is a deeper assimilation and reckoning of what has been transmitted. It being tested, contextualised, challenged, compared; the identification of parallels, metaphors and relationships that link ideas together. Sometimes the education system feels like a glorified pub quiz or game show, in which the fastest to answer gets the prize. Students don't need this because AI will beat all of us at this game 🔴HANDS DOWN!🔴 Knowledge is necessary, but what is learned and - MORE IMPORTANTLY - how it is delivered needs to evolve urgently! Schools and educational leaders have known this for so long now, and AI is a great opportunity to reimagine the teaching role. Understanding our strengths is crucial to personal and professional growth. Through Gallup's StrengthsFinder assessment, I discovered that my strongest strength is Relator. This strength centers on the ability to form deep, meaningful relationships, which has been a cornerstone of my journey in education and AI literacy. In practical terms, being a Relator means I thrive on building close, collaborative relationships. This strength has been instrumental in my work, particularly in advancing AI education. Together with colleagues like Matthew, Patrick, and my dear friend Iman, we bonded over our enthusiasm for AI's potential in education. This connection led to the creation of the AI Impact Champions—a professional learning community that empowers teachers nationwide to integrate AI into their classrooms confidently. Each month, we gather to explore new ideas, supported by a newsletter that both informs our discussions and broadens our reach. One of our collaborative highlights was winning an AI Hackathon, where we developed a concept to gamify the enrollment process—showcasing how AI can streamline and enhance educational administration. But beyond projects and innovations, it's the personal growth and confidence building in our teachers that truly underline the importance of strong relationships. These bonds have not only advanced their instructional practices but have also enabled them to teach their students about AI with assurance and creativity. My journey in education has been significantly shaped by relationships. From my start as an online teacher—thanks to my friend Heather—to my current role, every step has been influenced by connections that have enriched my professional life and leadership skills. AI can be daunting, but through trusted relationships, we can demystify and harness this technology to enrich our teaching and our lives. This achievement marks the conclusion of my MBA journey with Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University, where I’ve gained valuable insights into organizational behavior, strategy, finance, entrepreneurship, and more. Studying areas such as leadership, project management, and financial decision-making has given me a broadened perspective and equipped me with the skills to make informed decisions in dynamic business environments. I’m grateful for the opportunity to develop as a professional through this program. It's a human thing to try to predict the future. People should be more worried about living the moment, though. That's my humble idea. But now that we only focus to what will happen, let's talk about Higher Ed. This is an interesting article, but one more talking about the loss of skills. However, as the article itself suggests, there's some type of balance in the words. Not only negative things. My favourite part is when they suggest thinking about what really matters in Education. Yes! When was the last time we stopped and decided to really check what's going on in HE? I consider GenAI amazing for forcing us to stop and rethink. Rethink Education! I have no idea what's happening in the future, but I'm enjoying this present of uncertainty. Without saying how much I've been having fun seeing every single person becoming an AI specialist... My mother always told me that if something wasn’t quite feeling right in my belly then it was better out than in. So, in honouring this line of reasoning I admit that there has been, for quite some time, particularly during the lowlights of the pandemic, rumblings that I have felt would be better out than in. I start in this vein with the following thoughts: Are schools the last bastions of socialisation for society? Why is Elon Musk scared of AI? Why are children spending their formative education writing in exercise books but will never pick up a pen in their professional lives? What will happen to traditional arts in the future? If machine learning will outstrip the pace, efficacy, depth and breadth of human learning, what will schools and qualifications need to adapt to in the next 3-5 years? What is school uniform preparing students for when a significant number of professionals are working remotely half-dressed in their pants? How can the public sector, specifically schools, allow flexible working practices that compete with the private workplace?
