This week, I had the privilege of attending the Executive Career Transition Seminar, an eye-opening experience that marked another step in my journey from the Marine Corps to becoming a civilian. Cyndi (Po) Posusney CDCS and Michele Lewis held a phenomenal seminar! After nearly 21 years in uniform, the idea of transitioning is exciting, humbling, and a little terrifying! The seminar reinforced that while leadership, discipline, and resilience are near universal qualities in the military, translating military experiences into civilian language is a skill in itself. It’s more than finding a job; it’s about finding purpose and creating impact in a new environment. Here are a few key takeaways from the seminar: Storytelling Matters: Learn to articulate your military experiences in a way that resonates with civilian employers. Networking/Relationship Building is Key: Relationships drive opportunities. Invest in meaningful connections. Know Your Value: Military service instills highly sought skills. Own them confidently. As the Career College Transition Fair comes up April 17 at Seymour High School, we are introducing you to the participants. U.S. Army, Marine Corps and Navy Since its official establishment June 14, 1775, more than a year before the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Army has played a vital role in the growth and development of the American nation. Drawing on both long-standing militia traditions and recently introduced professional standards, it won the new republic's independence in an arduous eight-year struggle against Great Britain. At times, the Army provided the lone symbol of nationhood around which patriots rallied. Since Nov. 10, 1775, the U.S. Marine Corps is a legacy of having each other’s back— and never backing down. On legendary battlefields like Guadalcanal, Chosin Reservoir and Marjah in defense of our national interests. Through necessary actions back home, enabling our own struggling communities to thrive once more. Then and now, every Marine is a United States Marine, fighting through every circumstance to continue our nation's advance. The U.S. Navy’s creation and development extended over nearly a quarter of a century, from the American Revolution to the Quasi-War with France, and proceeded in the face of numerous political, philosophical and economic obstacles. Rose Gardens Yield Flowers, not Marines Last month, I attended a conference in DC to address the recruiting crisis across the DOD. I attended this conference with a handful of active-duty Marines, ranging from SNCO to Field-Grade Officer. The following words are my own, however I think it’s important to emphasize the concept/issue below was discussed ad nauseam by the Marines. As previously mentioned, I try to use this platform to amplify their voices. So, here we are. Please also note, the below thoughts are specific to the Marine Corps. _____ The conference speakers encouraged the audience to leverage lessons from the private sector to address #recruiting issues across the #military. This was the foundation of each presentation and the crux of our issue. Marines aren’t the private sector. Marines aren’t civilians. Marines aren’t employees. Marines are a different breed. Civilians will never understand what makes Marines tick, what draws them to service, what makes them sign that dotted line — if they did, they would’ve worn the title United States Marine. So why are we attempting to assimilate to the private sector? Why are we letting, or attempting to let, civilian organizations dictate what military recruiting should look like, what it should be focused on, who it should target? _____ I’m not sure how other branches work, but when I joined the Marine Corps, my recruiter put 11 enlisted-benefit tags in front of me. He told me to pick the three I sought most in life. I chose travel and adventure. I chose challenge. I chose pride of belonging. I didn’t enlist for quality of life, work life balance, or virtual work opportunities. Those are some stellar fringe benefits and I expect them from corporate America, but they’re certainly not what drives a highschool student to the Marine Corps. Marines should be paid well. They should have mold free barracks, digestible food, and access to affordable childcare. However, if your engagement strategy focuses on these tangibles, you will not recruit or retain #Marines. Promise (and give) Marines deployments, field exercises, training opportunities. Give them an austere environment. Give them camaraderie. Give them challenge. Only them will you see numbers change. _____ If the goal is to hire employees, sell tangibles and assimilate to corporate America. If the goal is to recruit Marines, sell intangibles, and give them more. #marinecorps #semperfidelis #veteransstrengtheningamerica #recruiter
