Ruma Devi’s journey from a Class 8 dropout in rural Barmer, Rajasthan, to a global icon for women artisans is proof that resilience can change destinies. Married at 17 and a mother shortly after, she faced the devastating loss of her firstborn due to financial constraints. But Ruma didn’t let tragedy define her. Armed with the embroidery skills she learned as a child, she rallied 10 village women and, with the support of a local NGO, transformed their artistry into a sustainable livelihood. Today, Ruma leads a network of 30,000 women, uplifting families and redefining rural empowerment.
