While Tennessine itself may not have immediate practical applications, its discovery represents a significant step forward in our scientific understanding and technological capabilities. The discovery of Tennessine (Ts), element 117, is significant for a few reasons: Completing the Seventh Row of the Periodic Table: Tennessine filled the last empty slot in the seventh row of the periodic table. This completion helps solidify the current structure of the periodic table and our understanding of how elements are organized based on their atomic structure. Island of Stability: Tennessine falls within a predicted zone of superheavy elements called the "island of stability." Unlike most elements beyond Bismuth on the periodic table which are very unstable and decay quickly, elements in this island are predicted to be more stable, lasting for longer periods. Tennessine's existence provides evidence for this island's existence and motivates further research into its properties. Pushing the Boundaries of Nuclear Physics: Synthesizing Tennessine involved complex procedures and powerful machines. It demonstrates our growing capability to manipulate matter at the atomic level and deepens our understanding of nuclear physics and the forces that hold atomic nuclei together. International Collaboration: The discovery of Tennessine involved collaboration between scientists from Russia and the United States. So, what is the periodic table? It's a system for arranging the chemical elements. All matter is made up of basic substances known as chemical elements. Each chemical element has a unique property known as its atomic number. That number is derived from the number of subatomic particles known as protons in each atom of the element. This is #antiracismeducation in action! Sharif El-Mekki thank you for leading and sharing this initiative to increase the number of Black Educators. Your post is just what I needed to support my work with educators, but more importantly to suppprt my son in understanding #internalizedracism. Earlier this week he reflected on the fact that in his 9 years of school, he has never had a Black teacher nor seen one in his schools. I asked him what he thought was the reason and he responded with, “maybe Black people aren’t good teachers.” 💔 This came from a kid who expresses pride in being Black (and Filipino) and who can identify racism when he sees it, yet because of the lack of representation of Black educators he has developed a very dangerous assumption. I can talk about the barriers and the reasons why he has never had a Black teacher, but this initiative, The Black Teacher Pipeline Fellowship, is what he needs to see to make my words real. What other professions are our Indigenous, Black, and students of colour not considering because they don’t see themselves? How unfortunate for those companies and organizations to be missing out this talent! I’m hopeful that in BC, Canada, through the development of the K-12 Anti-racism Action Plan that we will see similar change at the systems level. See action plan in the comments below. "In January 1902, Anna Julia Cooper, one of the most highly educated Black women in the country, was appointed the seventh principal of Northwest D.C.’s famed M Street High School, the first and most prestigious public high school for Black education. Black people from around the country aspired to send their children to M Street, and its roster of teachers and graduates read like a Who’s Who of Washington’s Black educational and cultural elite. Under Cooper’s leadership, M Street students won scholarships and gained admissions to top colleges and universities — including Harvard, Brown, Yale and Dartmouth. But just four years into Cooper’s tenure, days before the start of a new school year, the White director of Washington high schools persuaded the D.C. Board of Education not to reappoint M Street’s acclaimed principal. When Cooper arrived for the first day of school, the janitor barred her from entering the building. Police officers observed from across the street. They were ordered to arrest Cooper if they deemed she was creating a disturbance. With her students watching from the windows, Cooper — always a model of dignity and decorum — exited the school grounds. Cooper’s story, now largely forgotten, was part of a wider movement to control the direction of Black public education in the early 20th century. Then, like now, battles over education — and especially the question of who was permitted to lead elite institutions, training the next generation to excel — were proxies in the larger culture wars. Today, with female and minority leaders of universities facing resistance from people who assume they have not earned the right to hold their positions, Cooper’s story is an illuminating one. What happened to her illustrates not only how the tactics around removing such leaders have persisted for more than a century, but also what was at stake — and still is — in the battles over educational access and leadership."
