I love watching students grow in the sport of shooting firearms. Today I was able to watch a man who when we first met: ❌ Wasn’t able to rack his slide back on his pistol ❌ Wasn’t able to load his rounds in his magazine ❌ wasn’t able to hit his target more than 5 yds away. To watching him take what he learned from the first session and: ✅ Rack his slide back ✅Load his own rounds in his own magazine ✅ Hit his target beyond 5yds away This is growth! He grew his capability to perform from going home and training up on the things that were taught to him. This is being a good student. This is what leadership looks like and taking advantage of your own growth. After two lessons with him, we are on track to acquire targets faster, avoid the bad habit of anticipating the shot, and put more shots on target at greater distances. One of my favourite Viktor Frankl quotes is, "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom". Easy to say, less easy to do; especially when the space between the stimulus and response is almost non-existent! So, how do we find the “freedom” to act in those milliseconds between when something happens to us and our response? How can we integrate what our instincts are telling us to do, what our intuition is telling us to do and what our intellect is telling us to do? Those in the Navy Seals, the SAS, the GIGN, etc. are trained to make those microsecond “life and death” decisions. What do they do when they see a shadowy figure in smoke filled building holding something long – do they instinctively shoot and maybe kill a hostage holding a broom or do they wait and maybe get shot by a terrorist holding a Kalashnikov? Clearly, we do not face the same situations as the elite forces, but what can we learn from them to better manage the freedom to choose between our daily stimuli and our responses? In 1961, President Dwight Eisenhower famously warned Americans about what he called the “military-industrial complex,” a term he used to describe the toxic union between special interests and people in power. Companies can make a lot of money selling weapons to the government, and those companies can in turn fund candidates friendly to their business model. American companies dominate the industry. 13 out of these top 20 companies are headquartered in the U.S., collectively generating $178.5B in yearly sales of military equipment. An additional 2 companies are from the U.K., meaning that 80% of the top 20 companies come from the English-speaking world. Another important takeaway is that every company on the list comes from the Western, developed world. Ultimately, that means any active war zone around the globe has been almost undoubtedly made possible by Western companies. Large segments of the economies of developed nations (especially in the U.S.) depend on manufacturing and selling weapons and other military-related manufactured goods. Does that mean the stated American foreign policy goals of encouraging global efforts toward peace are inherently at odds with the country’s own domestic political and economic interests? What a journey! The professors and DSL curriculum have been instrumental in helping me discover my strengths while recognizing opportunities for growth, highlighting areas of interest, and helped me sketch out a career path to pursue. The impact SEU, the DSL program, each professor, and cohort-mate has had on me is worth sharing! It is my prayer this capstone project is structured in a way to provide a glimpse of what embarking on a journey of growth and development has taught me - which to sum up is knowing thyself is the beginning of all wisdom, develop a plan and don’t be scared to edit, revise, and then reattack the plan, and finally, and just as important, lean on “your circle” to navigate when reality hits. 

Some people say that leading a sales team is like leading a war. You have to know what you aim for, what kind of soldiers you have, what are the weapons owned and how good they are in a battle, what is the condition of the war that they are facing. Lastly, knowing what kind of strategy used and how to optimize them in winning the war.
