** Internship projects in animal behaviour and welfare ** Livestock production faces increasing scrutiny due to its environmental impact, particularly such as its contribution to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and N-pollution. To mitigate these, an increasing number of experiments are done involving respiration/methane chambers (mainly in cattle) and metabolic cages (in pigs). However, one aspect of these studies, that have not been studied yet, is the potential impact of these experiments on animal welfare, for example caused by mobility restriction and impossibility to socialise, potentially leading to negative emotional states. At the Aarhus University, Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences we have the opportunity to be among the first to study consequences of experimentation focusing on the mitigation of climate change and N-pollution on animal welfare. 🌍 Passion for advancing Animal Welfare in livestock production🌍 Hello LinkedIn network! A few years ago I asked myself: "What would be the best cause or subject to dedicate my professional life to?"  Today, I have realised that the issue of animal welfare in the service of an ethical cause, but also to support the actors in the world of agriculture, is essential, which is why I'm asking for your help. Animal welfare in livestock production is not only a priority, it is essential for sustainable and ethical farming, as well as helping farmers to cut costs and achieve higher quality production. As a Master's student in Physical Geography at the Institute of Urban Planning and Alpine Geography (IUGA) in Grenoble, France, I am driven to contribute to this important cause. I am particularly interested in developing innovative tools for measuring animal welfare, leveraging AI and advanced data analytics. 🔍 My Objective: To engage in a 3-6 month research-oriented internship where I can apply my skills in statistical data analysis to advance the understanding and implementation of animal welfare practices in agriculture. This experience will also prepare me for a future thesis on this critical topic. 🎯 What I Bring : - Expertise in forestry, ecology, hydrology, agriculture, cartography, data analysis, statistics, GIS, remote sensing, and animal production. - Advanced proficiency in tools like QGIS, ArcGIS, and R Studio for mapping and data analysis. - Fieldwork experience, including a Master’s thesis focused on integrating animal welfare in European livestock systems, and involvement in international research projects. - Language skills: English (C1) and Spanish (B1). 📅 Available : From February 2025   📍 Location : Open to opportunities in Paris, Grenoble, Lyon, or abroad (Spain, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Canada). In 2022, I began collaborating with NGOs across the country to support their work in conservation from a veterinary perspective. The Turtle Survival Alliance is one such organization, dedicated to protecting key stakeholders of riverine systems, including 19 freshwater turtle species, crocodiles, gharials, and dolphins. We provided veterinary assistance to TSA by posting veterinarians to assist them in maintainaing assurance colonies and assistance in triage and treatment during mass confiscations of illegally smuggled turtles. Through this collaboration, we gained valuable insights and decided to share our findings with the world, leading to this paper. Soft shell turtles, one of the largest but most elusive species in riparian systems, are particularly vulnerable to water pollution, which can lead to high mortality rates. Our work in Assam involved identifying a suitable and safe location to draw blood for analysis in these aggressive animals. This paper details our findings. We offer a paid internship for veterinarians aspiring to work with reptiles, placing them with this organization for six months and helping them produce a paper that benefits turtles and science.
