A Courageous Child Abuse Survivor – 60 Minutes. In a recent episode of 60 Minutes, Madeleine West shared her story as a survivor of child abuse and the impact it had on her life. Her bravery in speaking out raises awareness of the insidious and destructive effects of Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs). These effects can be pervasive into adulthood and can prevent healing if left unaddressed. As a society, we must acknowledge that many survivors of abuse may have never disclosed or been justly supported. Despite this adversity, there are professionals who care. Gratitude to those determined Police investigators. It’s never too late to access your right to guidance, support, justice, and healing. If you have information or questions, resources are available. There ya have it folks... This is NOT OK! I am rarely at a loss for words, but h this... Every single person involved should be held accountable! This may very well be the most reckless disregard for all things safety that I have ever witnessed. And it's their own child! Globally, it is estimated that up to 1 billion children aged 2–17 years, have experienced physical, sexual, or emotional violence or neglect in the past year. Children are vulnerable to abuse and, depending on their age, may not know or understand child abuse. For this reason, child mistreatment can go unreported and unaddressed. To prevent and combat the abuse of children, it’s up to all of us, neighbors, community members, clinicians, and other members of society, to intervene.

Joining hands on National Day of Hope in ending child abuse and neglect 🕊️ When we examine Childhood Domestic Violence (CDV) alongside child abuse, it's vital to grasp both their similarities and differences. Despite variations in manifestation, the impact on children's well-being remains profound and enduring. Let's debunk the misconception that direct abuse holds more weight than witnessing violence. Research shows that CDV's effects can be just as devastating. CDV and child abuse often co-occur within the same household, with children facing increased risks of direct abuse in CDV environments. This intertwining highlights the need for comprehensive approaches to address both effectively. While CDV and child abuse may differ in occurrence, their impact on children's lives is equally significant. Recognizing this interconnectedness is crucial for developing interventions that meet the complex needs of affected children and families. 🌟 #NationalDayOfHope #EndChildAbuse #BreakTheCycle #CDVAwareness #ChildhoodDomesticViolence #ACEs #ChildhoodTrauma #FamilyDysfunction #ItsNotYourFault

🔴 Sensitive Subject Alert: 🔴Domestic Violence and Childhood ACEs Four years ago, Chrissie created a powerful video detailing the 5 types of domestic violence. It’s a crucial topic that impacts so many lives, especially children. Since then, new statistics, research and laws are in place, but it continues to impact so many lives. Children who have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are more likely to form insecure attachments and end up in domestically violent relationships as adults. Just three years ago, the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 recognised children exposed to domestic abuse as victims in their own right, not just witnesses. This was a significant step forward. Reflecting on the Kaiser Permanente study from 1995-97, it's important to note that it only recognised 'violence against mother' as an ACE. However, recent statistics show that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experience interpersonal violence. Research shows that children without counter-ACEs, a secure base, a trusted adult, or education on healthy relationships are more likely to find comfort in chaos (Bessel van der Kolk). This highlights the importance of creating supportive environments and educating children on healthy relationships. Let's continue to raise awareness and support those impacted by ACEs and domestic violence. 💔 The more we can educate ourselves and the children we care for, the more we can empower people to make change. Each year, World Children’s Day is celebrated on November 20, marking the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. At Safe Steps, we are reminded of the critical need to protect and support children and young people—44% of our clients fall into this vulnerable group, all affected by family and domestic violence. Children are not just passive witnesses to violence; they experience it in deeply personal and impactful ways that shape their emotional, physical, and psychological development. Often unable to fully articulate their trauma, their experiences are real and deserve to be recognised and addressed with the same level of care as adult survivors. At Safe Steps, we believe children and young people must receive comprehensive, wrap-around support tailored to their unique needs. By recognising them as victims in their own right, we ensure they are not left behind in the fight to end family and domestic violence and in our broader effort to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma. If we are to create lasting change, we must approach the issue of family and domestic violence holistically, supporting all survivors—both adults and children—and providing future generations the opportunity to heal and thrive. Today, on World Children’s Day, we reaffirm our commitment to offering the support services and care necessary to help children and young people heal, recover, and rebuild their lives. #WorldChildrensDay #EndDomesticViolence #SupportChildren #SafeSteps #BreakTheCycle #FamilyViolenceAwareness #ChildProtection #HealingGenerations

Expect incitement, clarity, guidance, reflection, ideas and empowerment. The current safeguarding and trauma healing system must recognise that a child is not responsible for stopping their abuse and people must be reached at where they are at. If you are a curious and determined relational human and want to be part of the solution of human suffering, then start by reading this book. “The only option is to dare"" #CSA #ChildSexualAbuse #memoir #therapymemoir #TheFlyingChildStory ZunTold Fiction As Therapy #Therapy Jo Watson (AD4E)

Today, we stand together in solidarity for Childhelp Day of Hope and the beginning of Child Abuse Prevention Month. Every child deserves to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment, free from fear and harm. Yet, millions of children worldwide continue to suffer in silence, facing the devastating impacts of abuse and neglect. The toll on their mental health is immeasurable. Child abuse not only inflicts physical wounds but also leaves deep emotional scars that can last a lifetime. The trauma experienced during childhood can lead to a myriad of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and low self-esteem. On this Day of Hope, let's unite our voices to break the silence surrounding child abuse and shine a light on this critical issue. Together, we can raise awareness, support survivors, and work towards creating a world where every child is cherished, protected, and empowered. Join us as we advocate for the rights of children everywhere. Together, we can make a difference and build a brighter, safer future for all. #ChildhelpDayOfHope #ChildAbuseAwarenessMonth #EndChildAbuse

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month. Did you know that in Utah: * 1 in 7 Utah children are sexually abuse by the age of 18. (This number used to be 1 in 5. Awareness brings improvement!) * 91% of the time, children are abused by someone they know and trust * More than half the calls to CPS are for reports of neglect I became a trauma therapist because I know and love so many people who have suffered from abuse as a child. When I began working with the Utah Legislature to improve laws in Utah, I met so many more, and my heart just wanted to share the things that have helped me on my healing journey. Prevent Child Abuse Utah (PCAUT) is one of my absolute FAVORITES when it comes to educating children, families, and communities about preventing child abuse of all kinds. PLEASE visit their website today and take their free online course to educate yourself, and send it to 5 people you know and love. Also, one of their hidden weapons is their education is their child abuse prevention kit for families: https://lnkd.in/gsh_cYJa I have shared it with clients who are fearful they won't be able to keep their own children safe, and it has brought great relief and knowledge to these wonderful families! There is no need to put your head in the sand. * If you've already experienced abuse, healing is POSSIBLE. * If you're afraid to talk to someone...TALK TO SOMEONE. * If you're afraid to discuss it, start by talking to those who KNOW HOW to discuss it. Awareness and compassion are everything. PCAUT Home Page: https://lnkd.in/gxy43WJb #IAmASurvivor #preventchildabuse #traumarecovery #iamamft #marriageandfamilytherapy
