"To do no harm - and the most good – with AI in health care." This was the theme of the Responsible AI for Social and Ethical Healthcare (RAISE) Conference organised by Harvard Medical School last 30-31 October 2023. 🏥 I was fortunate to be invited to join this expert group to discuss key issues and immediate actions for healthcare leaders. Amongst other things, we discussed the following questions: ➡ How can AI in healthcare address systemic issues such as medical errors and access disparities? ➡ How should financial models for AI integration in healthcare promote accessibility and efficiency? ➡ How do we balance opt-out and opt-in models in patient consent to ensure inclusivity? ➡ How should liability be allocated between healthcare providers and AI manufacturers in practice? ➡ What mechanisms should be put in place to continuously evaluate the effectiveness and safety of AI tools? 📜 Our discussions culminated in a framework document outlining recommendations and exploring trade-offs to promote ethical, equitable, and responsible AI in healthcare globally. 🌍 Published in Nature Medicine: https://lnkd.in/dCSkKdB4 And New England Journal of Medicine AI: https://lnkd.in/dtkZVAFQ Laura Adams, Noah Brown, Atul Butte, Isaac Kohane Dave deBronkart, Jennifer Dixon, Jeffrey Drazen, Sara Hoffman, Jonathan Perlin, Rupa Sarkar, Effy Vayena

NYU Langone Health has a communication tool build into their electronic health records through which patients can ask their physicians questions, refill prescriptions, and review test results. It's a great communication tool but physicians have recently started experiencing a more than 30 percent annual increase in the number of messages received daily. Some physicians received more than 150 messages (!!) per day. I Never Knew TMA: Had AI Experts on its HIT Committee. Recognizing the potential of AI to significantly impact health care, TMA recently added the consultants, also tasked with evaluating the use and benefits of AI in patient care, among other topics. Their work is just one example of how TMA physicians lead change in medicine. https://hubs.li/Q02_9STF0

1. Researchers advocate for increased regulation of AI in healthcare to ensure equitable patient care. 2. The U.S. Office for Civil Rights introduced a rule to prevent discrimination in patient care decision support tools, including AI. 3. This regulation aligns with the Biden administration's focus on health equity and non-discrimination. 4. Nearly 1,000 AI-enabled devices have been FDA-approved, primarily for clinical decision-making support. 5. No regulatory body currently oversees clinical risk scores used by decision support tools, despite widespread usage among physicians. 6. The Jameel Clinic will hold a regulatory conference in March 2025 to discuss AI in healthcare regulation. 7. Clinical risk scores, while simpler than AI algorithms, also require oversight to ensure fairness and transparency. 8. Regulatory challenges may arise under the new administration due to a focus on deregulation and opposition to existing health policies.
AI in health should be regulated, but don't forget about the algorithms, researchers say — Medical Xpress

Earlier this month, I had an incredible 'fireside chat' with American Medical Association's Head of digital innovation, Margaret Lozovatsky, MD, FAMIA at the premier global #physicianwellbeing conference, the International Conference of Physician Health in Nova Scotia. In the United States, nearly all hospital c-suites are developing their AI strategies, and many countries are looking to us as the innovators to follow. Key points: - AI will not replace clinicians, but over the next few years a majority of clinicians will use AI in their practice - Governance is key - we need physician thought leaders alongside our IT colleagues to bring in AI and monitor its safe use down the line - Start with the low-risk use cases where AI can draft content to curb administrative work: note documentation support (like Abridge), chart summarization and in-basket message response Most interesting to me is the role large associations like Canadian Medical Association, AMA and British Medical Association (the conference hosts) can play. As in this conference - giving physicians a foundation to understand new technologies and current uses is huge. I am eager to see how organized medicine helps build buy-in for AI, from its member clinicians to shaping policy at the highest levels
