A big thank you to Dr Christina Gitsaki, the conference organizing team, and the Center for Educational innovation at Zayed University for inviting me to speak on a panel at the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conference in Dubai last week.
A great line-up of speakers discussing the critically important topic: "The Next Chapter in HE: Navigating Teaching, Learning and Assessment in the Era of AI".
There is so much opportunity for transforming how scholars will teach and structure learning opportunities, and the range of ways AI tools can help with mundane tasks to free up more time for creative thinking. Serious discussions focused on information summarization, support for course creation, the need to keep up with the pace of change, quality control of information generation, what is and is not "cheating", content bias, and one of the biggest concerns, of course, is unequal access to advanced AI capabilities.
One of the best takeaways for me was the formation at some institutions of "think tank" panels to think through the next phase of teaching and learning where panels are made up of educators from all disciplines, administrators, IT and tech infrastructure experts, *and* students. Having the students be part of rethinking education in the era of AI is so critical.
Finally, it was heartening to see how ministries, industry, and universities are starting to work together to navigate the uncertainties of a future with a fast evolving AI. It is good to see such commitment and engagement.
