“Many, many cemeteries all over our territory have been decimated by development with not much regard for remains. It’s that sort of mentality that the western culture has imposed on us,” the late Wes Modeste (Qwustenuxun) told a reporter at The Pictorial in 1994. “In our culture, the remains are the remains of our ancestors. In every footprint, in every plan, We honor the earth, where time began. Heritage speaks through soil and stone, Preserved in layers, deeply sown. When a chance find comes to light, We act with care, with laws in sight. Mitigation plans and surveys keen, Protecting relics, both seen and unseen. Cultural assets, we hold dear, Each artifact tells a story clear. Through EIA and risk review, We safeguard history, old and true. Archaeological sites, fragile and grand, We protect with a gentle hand. With every excavation, with every find, We cherish the past, preserving in kind. Our commitment runs both deep and wide, In heritage, we take great pride. Balancing progress with respect for time, We weave the future, in rhythm and rhyme.
