Be ready for complexity: observe, adapt, overcome.

The citizen development trend seems to have fallen into the shadow of AI. The hope that low-code or even no-code could allow non-programmers to work with or even create their solutions with ease, like working with text editors, spreadsheets, and e-mails without programming, has faded. I have two such platforms in my sight: Microsoft Power platform and Salesforce. In both cases, there is frustration. The promised land turned out to be an illusion, and the dream was dreamed. The idea of civilian developers is not new and has been around for a while. But it looks like citizen developers are not civilian engineers. You need to have more profound knowledge and experience than do it yourself thinking. Looking back now, you can see that "Excel on steroids" is not enough; users are required to have more developer-like thinking to approach low-code solutions. The second thing is that the promises of marketing materials about a more effective and faster solution in the hands of the users themselves have also turned out to be too loud; platforms are under-delivering, i.e., expectations are not met. Our next wave to surf on is AI. But, since, for now, there is no "I" as intelligence in "AI," I assume there is something next behind the curve. The following post triggered my thought; it has a more in-depth dive and retrospective of Microsoft Power Platform in particular: https://lnkd.in/dSz84gCu.
