Snakebites injure up to 2.7 million and kill 81,000 to 138,000 people annually, with many venoms causing blood toxicity. In this video, we show a timelapse of a human endothelial tubule - MIMETAS' OrganoReady® Blood Vessel HUVEC platform - exposed to spitting cobra venom in the latest experiment of Flavio Bonanini in collaboration with Matyas Bittenbinder. This innovative research sheds light on the devastating effects of snakebites worldwide, offering a robust and human-relevant platform to study endothelial toxicity and potentially develop life-saving antidotes. Interesting fact: some chemists (not I) don't consider carbon tetrachloride to be an organic compound because, under one mainstream convention, organics must contain at least one C-H or C-C bond. HNC (lacks a C-H bond) is considered non-organic but the organic/inorganic status of HCN (contains a C-H bond but may be of ionic nature) is controversial, although its common metallic salts (cyanides) are definitively inorganic. It has been argued that simply containing a carbon is not enough to classify a compound as organic; carbonates, carbon dioxide, carbides (just to complicate matters, the last of these contain C-to-C triple bonds!), etc are given as examples. Most of the debate, I can shrug off, but the one that really gets me is chloroformic acid ClCOOH. Every fibre of my being screams out to accept this as organic, yet the popular convention is that it is not. The more you learn, the less you know. It would be interesting to hear the thoughts of chemists who are more expert than I, which is all of them.
TCEQ evaluation of carbon tetrachloride 🔊 TCEQ has finalised its Development Support Document (DSD) on carbon tetrachloride, which summarises how chemical-specific toxicity values were derived for protection of the general population. It established an acute 1-hour Reference Value (ReV) of 1300 ppb (8200 µg/m3) and an acute 24-hour ReV of 83 ppb (520 µg/m3), based on the observed effects on the central nervous system of healthy volunteers following inhalation. Significant fatty changes in the liver of male rats exposed by inhalation for 2 years were the basis for a chronic ReV of 25 ppb (160 µg/m3). TCEQ has also summarised its findings in a separate fact sheet. https://lnkd.in/de4jSevr https://lnkd.in/d-K4TbAq This is from the May edition of our publication, "Toxicology and Regulatory News". ☀️ The Alcohol Essentials Series Starts Now!☀️ The first course to launch in the Alcohol Pharmacokinetics section is Alcohol Absorption, presented by the distinguished Dr. Joey Jones, Director of the Northern Louisiana Criminalistics Laboratory. We are fortunate to have some amazing instructors from around the country present this critical content. Participants of this course will learn about different routes of alcohol administration, the role of the gastrointestinal tract, and other physiological considerations. Significant attention is devoted to understanding factors that do and do not affect the extent and rate of alcohol absorption. The course concludes with a review of best practices in considering alcohol absorption. This foundational course enhances understanding of the behavioral and physiological factors associated with alcohol absorption and will improve investigation, interpretation, and testimony in cases regarding alcohol impairment. This course is live now, with many more to follow. Check out our catalog at https://lnkd.in/gRjhT5d4 or see the roadmap for the Alcohol Essentials series at https://lnkd.in/eCWcgMzn #toxicology #alcohol #forensictoxicology #lawenforcementtraining #DRE #stopdui #drugimpairment

Join us on October 4th at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC for the ICCS Post-Conference Workshop, “Building Confidence in NAMs for Regulatory Use: Opportunities to advance beyond the 6-pack.” This event follows the ICCS Inaugural Meeting on October 3rd, also held at the same venue. This workshop will bring together regulators, industry leaders, and NGOs to explore ways to strengthen confidence in NAMs for regulatory purposes, moving beyond the traditional '6-pack' of acute toxicity tests. The agenda includes brief presentations from key representatives, such as OECD, US FDA, US EPA, NICEATM, Health Canada, and PETA International Science Consortium e.V., followed by a moderated panel discussion. Participants will also engage in two detailed case studies focusing on NAM-augmented read-across and ab initio assessment, with a focus on actionable next steps. Find out more about the workshop and how to register: https://lnkd.in/eghXgXsb #ICCS #ICCS2024 #NAMs #RegulatoryScience #Toxicology #Workshop

🔬 The latest evaluation from the Community rolling action plan (#CoRAP) sheds light on the characteristics of Oligomerisation and alkylation reaction products of 2-phenylpropene and phenol (#OAPP). The aim of such evaluation was to addresscrucial concerns regarding #PBT/vPvB, Endocrine disruption (#ED) properties affecting both our environment and human health, wide dispersive use and high (aggregated) tonnages. 🔍 The following conclusions were reached: - PBT/vPvB concern confirmed: One of OAPP's trimer constituents meets the vPvB criteria, marking OAPP as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC). - ED concerns: While dismissed for human health, concerns are confirmed for the environment, prompting potential regulatory follow-up at the EU level.
