Ironic France chose ‘Liberte’ as Olympic theme at a time in history when liberty is under assault globally. Another blunder, when Olympic flag was raised it was upside down, traditional sign of distress. Trying to find some semblance of a cohesive message in the far flung city wide extravaganza, came across clip attached below. Second half of clip features a sequence in a grand library where theme of ‘Love and Literature’ is introduced by three young characters passing books between, quickly flashing titles to the viewer. From a nation that gave us Camus, they chose to feature a selection of longing poems and predominantly titles exploring affairs. Only 4% of global population speak French, rendering cloaked meaning throughout sequence. One character of indistinguishable gender (androgynous) is voyeuristically observing a young man and a young woman exchanging glances across library tables. The sequence of titles listed below including a short synopsis of each and identifies who is holding the book. 1. Romances Sans Paroles - Poems, Love & whether shared or not and sufferance it brings (young woman) 2. On ne badine pas avec L’amour; No trifling with love: love delayed and death suffered by one injured by triangle (young man) 3. Passion Simple; longing and anxiety around lovemaking (young woman) 4. Bel Ami; Dear Friend: young man’s corrupt rise to power by sleeping with wife(s) of powerful men (passed from androgynous one to young man) 5. Sexe et Mensonges; Sex & Lies: Sex Life in Morocco: French-Moroccan woman details illicit affairs in Morocco, Islamic country which forbids behavior outside of marriage, including circumstances when officials are paid off by wealthy (passed from young man to androgynous one) Young woman gets up, followed by young man, then androgynous one follows. Each are running through upper floor racks of books, each pulling a different title out of rack. 6. Le Diable au Corps; The devil in the flesh: young married woman has affair with 16 yr old boy while her husband is at the front in WW1 (young woman) 7. Les Liaisons Dangerereuses; Dangerous acquaintances: two amoral lovers-turned-rivals who amuse themselves by ruining others and who ultimately destroy each other (androgynous one) 8. Les Amants Magnifiques; Magnificent Lovers: two rival princes compete to charm a young princess and her mother (young man) Now young woman is voyeur watching young man and androgynous one close together. At the end young man is seen flinging pages that float down like rain to center of library below. Love or agony ? End of clip features dancer-like figures atop long poles swaying, costumed in wild colorful prints evokes 1960’s era and period of Sexual Revolution. Drowned out by torrential rains, power outages short-circuiting screens, and global blowback on appropriation of Last Supper, Paris 2024 will go down in Olympic history as a warning of what not to do. #worldnews #firstpost #skynewsaustralia #culture #dangerousliaisons

"it’s a culture that begins with a joke, a gesture, a throwaway word or a game between friends, and it ends in an act of violence" https://lnkd.in/d3B2ig6b TW: sexual assault. One of our network's aims for this year was to inspire our membership, providing ample and varied learning opportunities to explore the topic of gender equality. So, with this in mind, Ogilvy Equals organised a group visit to the Almeida to see 'Alma Mater'. The play was engrossing - at times heartbreaking, at times galvanising - but what struck me the most was the crafting of a narrative in which so many different perspectives are explored without judgement. The writing manages to silently pass the sympathetic spotlight from person to person, in a nuanced and multi dimensional take on rape culture, belonging, intergenerational differences and culpability. It was moving, brilliantly acted, and it gave us loads to think about. As a young(ish) woman watching the play, I resonated strongly with the younger characters - their lived experiences all too familiar from my own pre #MeToo university experience. However, it was enlightening to explore the older generation's response - I feel I learned a lot about where they were coming from; even if I didn't agree with their actions, I could understand the 'why' behind them. What arguably proved even more thought-provoking was the post show Q&A, where it became clear that some audience members had experienced the play altogether differently. The panel were met with a couple of rageful responses, condemning particular characters as 'evil', with victim blaming at the forefront of their arguments. It was both interesting and worrying to see such binary responses, given that the play has, in the words of the principal actor, 'no real goodies or baddies'. It seems it had, for some people, proved quite a confronting watch, and their response was to apportion blame - not to the perpetrator of the assault, but to those left behind in its wake. I guess this shows how relevant broader conversations around gender equality really are. Even though that Q&A proved both a distressing and anger-fuelling space, I'm glad we witnessed it. It certainly made me aware of opinions outside my own echo chamber, and served as a good reminder - there is plenty of work left to do.

Source: Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia From the article: "Drag is a performance of exaggerated femininity, masculinity, or other forms of gender expression, usually for entertainment purposes. Drag usually involves cross-dressing. A drag queen is someone (usually male) who performs femininely and a drag king is someone (usually female) who performs masculinely. Performances often involve comedy, social satire, and at times political commentary.[1][2][3] The term may be used as a noun as in the expression in drag or as an adjective as in drag show.[4]" #Pride #Drag #DragQueen

Manjeri Chaturvedi - The Courtesan Project Manjeri Chaturvedi is Classical Indian Kathak Dancer, Director & Choreographer, TedX Speaker, Cultural Academic, Creator of Sufi Kathak and Restorer of Dance of Courtesans, President, Sufi Kathak Foundation. I am completely amazed and taken a back which has made me post this article for all my readers and connects with cinematic background, founders and enthusiast calling for an action. My thoughts got wired and compelled me to write after watching "Heeramandi- The Diamond Bazaar" series on Netflix which had flaws in depicting characters and subject which was applauded by intended audience without truly understanding the gravity. The portrayal of women as mere courtesans, often reduced to just singers and dancers of the court, has always been a concern of mine. This depiction is not only incorrect but also diminishes the rich cultural and intellectual contributions these women made to society. Courtesans were far more than entertainers; they were learned individuals who mastered the arts, literature, and social etiquette. In many instances, children from affluent households were sent to these women to learn refined mannerisms and cultural sophistication. However, cinema has consistently perpetuated gender biases, portraying male counterparts as "Ustaads" or masters, while women are interchangeably depicted as courtesans and sex workers. This misrepresentation undermines the historical significance and the respected status that courtesans held in their times. They were educators, cultural preservers, and influencers who played crucial roles in the social and cultural fabric of their communities. To all my esteemed contacts in the film industry and those involved in producing movies sustainably, it is imperative to address this misrepresentation. Achieving gender equity, one of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), requires us to re-examine and rectify the narratives we propagate through media and cinema. Manjari Chaturvedi- Thank you for your highlights and the message from this project must reach beyond the domestic boundries.

Engaging in Positive Diversions Following the recent loss of my beloved mother, I've found solace in seeking diversions to maintain productivity and navigate daily responsibilities. This experience has prompted me to reflect on coping mechanisms during times of stress, anxiety, or sorrow, and I'm curious to hear about the uplifting activities others turn to in similar circumstances. One of my enduring passions is music appreciation. Despite never mastering an instrument due to a discouraging experience with a stern flute instructor in middle school, my love for music remains steadfast. I find myself drawn more to music than television or films. Consequently, my recent focus has been on music research, akin to my dedication to physical education and advocating for inclusive opportunities, particularly for girls facing barriers in sports. In alignment with my commitment to amplifying marginalized voices, I've embarked on a journey to spotlight trailblazing female guitarists. Inspired by the pioneering spirit of Memphis Minnie, who revolutionised the electric guitar and defied societal norms, I've channeled my fascination into creating informative videos. My intention is not to seek popularity or self-promotion but to honor the legacies of remarkable women like Memphis Minnie and inspire aspiring musicians, especially young girls eager to explore guitar playing. Exploring Memphis Minnie's story has been an enriching experience, and I am eagerly delving into the life and music of Sister Rosetta Tharpe as my next endeavor. With a lineup of around 10 female artists I aim to feature, I am genuinely excited about this personal project. It's not about gaining likes, attention, or followers; it's about nurturing my passion and sharing meaningful stories that deserve recognition. I invite you to share your own positive distractions. You never know whose spirit you might uplift with a simple diversion. #music #memphisminne #bereavement #diversion #distractions

Hi Despite the very weak internet from the depths of the Tacoma forests in the U.S., I did my best for this presentation. Unfortunately, there is still some audio noise, but hopefully, it may still be helpful...This lecture is structured around three key historical periods in Iranian music: the Constitutional Revolution, the Pahlavi era (before the Islamic Revolution), and the post-1979 Islamic Republic period. Each of these periods reflects different social and political climates that have significantly influenced the role of women in the music industry ...And I believe that despite the strict regulations, women both inside and outside of Iran have continued to find ways to express their music. Movements like the 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests have highlighted the ongoing struggles for gender equality. Music plays a vital role in these efforts. I think that the most important need today is to create a dedicated space for preserving, recording, and organizing these resources in a clear and audio format on accessible online databases. This means establishing a well-defined music archive for the history of Iran from various perspectives, in collaboration with different fields of the humanities...
