BigBasket's data breach is all over the news today. It's in the front page of Business Standard and there's also a substantially large story in Mint. While the company has issued a statement in response to the media reports, *to the media*, isn't it appropriate that they also inform users directly too? If we users read about the breach in the news and do not hear anything from the company directly, that looks terribly bad from a corporate communications perspective. Companies gleefully go over the board with offers and new deals to email, sms us customers. But when it comes to bad news, why delay informing customers? If they knew the news is going to be out today in the papers (they have sent a statement to the media, after all!), why not include users in the communications roster? Why let us users discuss it among ourselves? Why not clarify the company's perspective, taking us into the fold, explain the nature of the breach, the extent of the breach and what we should do, if at all there is something we can? The timeline for such communication is before, during or as close to the news coming out in mainstream media. This is very disappointing. #corporatecommunications #publicrelations #corporatereputation #communications #pr #reputationmanagement

This is indeed disappointing. Least they could do is to admit and address the customers.

WOW. I wish these guys were using my tools. With a fraction of the fine, they could have everything implemented.

What's the big deal ? have they stolen their bank or card details ?? every day our Name, Number, address, and loan details are shared with companies as a ' database'. If privacy is taken seriously and regulations are strict, then this is new. Orelse every relax..you are in the digital age.

What has been frustrating for me regarding this data breach is the lack of responsibility demonstrated by BigBasket in making customers aware of the breach. I reached out to them to ask for more information, and they said they scheduled a call. However, it's been 3 days since, and I haven't received any information. The fact that there was a leak of addresses, phone numbers, and other sensitive information, and BigBasket didn't think to alert customers for weeks is extremely irresponsible.

So disappointed. Bigbasket had a great opportunity to engage it's users but chose not to. The adage customer is our North Star only seems valid for revenue and profit :(

It is very unfortunate that such breach happened. But it is to be noticed that every big organization including, so called, companies with strong cyber breach walls, have been breached. This includes big companies in Wall street, departments in Defense and finance in India and abroad. So there is no point in just blaming the organizations alone, it is part and parcel of E-world. The risk is built in. There could be many visible and hidden business reasons for such breaches. Only hope and wish such organizations shore up there defenses to next level and continuously do audit and upgrading of their cyber security system. Wish our Indian organization, Big Basket a quick recovery and continued success..
