As a COO, upholding the company culture is one of my top priorities. During our team planning days, we do an activity that reinforces our company values and brings our team even closer together. We start by writing our company values on a flip chart or slide. Then, we go around the room and ask each person to tell the person on their right which value they embody the most and why. This continues until we've gone around the entire room. The response is always overwhelming. There are tears of joy, proud moments, and definitely people feeling "seen". This exercise not only sets the tone for the day, but it reinforces our company values and brings our team closer together. Have you ever worked in a Vulture Culture? It’s where people don’t trust each other and decisions get made in conversations that only a few people have together but those decisions affect everyone else. It’s a work place of anger, suspicion, fear, and conspiracy theories. Vulture Cultures seep the joy out of work and eventually out of life. The antidote to Vulture Culture is working out loud together in secure but transparent operational channels of digital labor, where the engagement contains only that which adds value to the company and the customer. The rest of the drama is unnecessary noise that should be turned down like a radio squelch. I know how to do that in your company because I’ve done it in mine.
