More than 10 years ago, I lifted a practice from Oprah that transformed my perspective: keeping a daily gratitude list of 5 items. When life is humming along, these moments of appreciation come easily. But during tough times—like navigating job loss and searching for work—finding gratitude feels like a true test. But it's precisely during the challenging times when gratitude seems elusive, that the practice proves most powerful—helping shift focus from what's broken to what's still working. My daily gratitude runs the gamut—from the magisterial (being happy to wake up another day with an easy breath) to the more earthly (finding a perfectly placed trash can during dog walks). When you're committed to noting 5 things daily, even the small stuff counts. In this season of thanks, I'm deeply grateful for the privilege of being a part of my clients' career transitions -- through their grief, their bold ambitions, their challenges, and ultimate triumphs. #Thanksgiving #Gratitude #Oprah #CareerTransformation

Count the Cost of Relo Almost every week someone from the Northeast calls to inquire about the availability of positions in Florida. As simple as it is, my first question is: WHY??? I get the usual responses: to be closer to family or they are tired of the Northeastern winters. As important as those two factors may be, there are many other considerations when moving to another state, not the least of which is CULTURE. Most of my life was spent in what I call beautiful Bucks County, PA. There are four definite seasons, and the falls and springs are almost idyllic. I consider myself to be a Northeasterner at heart. Die-hard Phillies and Eagles fan. I love hot weather so that appealed to me about moving to Florida, but what I didn’t consider was how different the culture is here. People have moved here from all over so there aren’t very many natives, and it is extremely transient with people coming and going all the time, so it’s much harder to get to know people. People in the Northeast make a big deal about most holidays. We have parades, haunted houses, hayrides, bonfires, and picnics on the 4th of July, and everyone goes to the shore on Memorial Day and Labor Day. Extended families get together for birthdays, anniversaries, and pretty much any excuse to celebrate. There are a lot more Halloween parties in the Northeast. Yes, they have those kinds of things in Florida, but they are not very interesting. It seems like the only things people get excited about here are Disney, the weather and maybe college sports. Now lest you think I am a Debbie Downer, it has taken me ten years, but I actually like it here now. I love dining outside at night in the winter and swimming almost all year. I love the clean warm beaches where you don’t need a beach tag and boating on the many lakes. So, if you are thinking about relocation, make sure you take into consideration how different the culture is from where you are now. Maybe you will love the differences.
