At Karoo Health, we have become alarmed by, and vocal about, the frequent overuse of remote patient monitoring (RPM) by point solutions and its perception as an easy revenue grab and VBC substitute, undermining the long-term value and seachange required in cardiovascular care. This month, the OIG released a report, "Additional Oversight of Remote Patient Monitoring in Medicare Is Needed," which highlights crucial concerns in the rapidly-growing overuse of RPM: -Potential overuse and fraud identified -20-fold increase in RPM payments from 2019 to 2022 -43% of enrolled patients lacking full monitoring program components At Karoo Health, we see the value in RPM as one useful element in the toolbox of VBC, when used responsibly, and advocate for its use in appropriate cases such as: -Integrated administration: Alignment with overall treatment plan -Patient specific: Assessment individual patient’s need -Ethical use: Avoidance of indiscriminate enrollment Our approach ensures RPM's value in patient interventions, while maintaining integrity in healthcare innovation.
