Air Valve Sizing & DVD Vacuum Breakers Air Valve Sizing is done by calculating the air capacity requirement both for Air Intake and Discharge. Pipelines are designed to resist positive pressure but are sensitive to negative pressure (vacuum). Therefore vacuum becomes a very critical issue and must be prevented to protect the system and collapsing of pipelines. In order to achieve such protection, air valves with high air Intake capacity are required. On the other hand, air discharge capacity requirement of the pipeline is much lower than the air intake need, since this requirement depends mainly on the flow rate of the medium. When a typical Air Release Valves is considered, the user has to select the valve size to match the air Intake requirement, but ends up having an excessive air release capacity. Such may create problems of increasing the velocity of the water column arriving to the Air Release Valve, hence causing slamming effect of the Air Release Valve. In order to prevent such a scenario, “DVD Vacuum Breakers with Integral Air Release Valve” are used. These items have an enormous air intake capacity and are equipped with a smaller size Air Release Valve matching the exact air discharge requirement of the project. As a result, the user gets the exact amount of Air Intake and Air Discharge capacity he needs. We wanted to showcase one of our unique product features this week on our submersible turbine pumps, the FloWise Upthrust Plug. One necessary component to every submersible turbine pump is the upthrust plug that is picture here, screwed into the top of the discharge case of the bowl assembly. When a submersible turbine starts up in the well, it will experience momentary upthrust until the hydraulic pressure builds enough the force the rotating shaft/impellers back into a safe running position within the casing. The job of the upthrust plug is to safely absorb that momentary force. When we designed our proprietary upthrust plug, we eliminated the need for an added lip seal in the discharge case by placing spiral grooves along the entire plug so that the inevitable sand and abrasives can pass through the pump with the fluid and not get trapped in the top bearing causing wear. In addition, our design also eliminates the need for an upthrust disc that many manufactures use. The robust yet simplistic design of this plug with allow for an extremely easy adjustment if needed in the field.
