October 29th is World Stroke Day. Commit to learning and sharing the B.E.F.A.S.T. warning signs. You just might save a life from stroke. Strokes can happen to anyone, at any age. On average, 1.9 million brain cells die every minute that a stroke goes untreated. Globally, about one in four adults over the age of 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime. Yet most adults don’t know the B.E.F.A.S.T. warning signs of a stroke, or that stroke is largely treatable if you call emergency services as soon as you recognize the symptoms. Understanding Strokes and How to Act FAST What is a Stroke? A stroke happens when there is a blockage or rupture in the blood vessels supplying blood to the brain. This can lead to brain damage and requires immediate medical attention. Recognizing & Knowing the signs of a stroke and acting quickly can save lives. Remember the acronym FAST: F - Face Drooping: Does one side of the face droop or feel numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the smile uneven? A - Arm Weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? S - Speech Difficulty: Is speech slurred or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Is it repeated correctly? T - Time to Call 911: If you observe any of these signs, call 911 immediately. Time is critical. Understanding strokes and how to act quickly can make a life-saving difference. Today is World Stroke Day #WorldStrokeDay2024. If you know someone who has had a stroke, you will know just how devasting they are. Strokes can happen to anyone, at any age. In Scotland there are around 12,000 hospital admissions for stroke each year – that’s an average of 33 per day or 1 every 44 minutes. Stroke is the 3rd commonest cause of death in Scotland. F.A.S.T is the acronym used that can help you quickly identify if someone is having a stroke. Minutes really do matter in treating a stroke. Early recognition of stroke symptoms can help patients get to specialist treatment faster and improve their chances of a better outcome. It's really important to call 999 if you notice any of these signs: F: Face: Is there weakness on one side of the face, or does the mouth or eye droop? A: Arms: Can the person raise both arms? S: Speech: Is their speech easily understood, or do they slur their words? T: Time to call 999 immediately Other symptoms of a stroke include: Weakness or numbness down one side of the body Blurred vision or loss of sight in one or both eyes Difficulty speaking or thinking of words Confusion and memory loss Feeling dizzy or falling over A severe headache Please help spread this message and raise awareness of F.A.S.T #ActFast www.stroke.org.uk

Knowing more about prevention and symptoms of stroke could save millions of lives. Did you know: 💙1 in 4 of us will have a stroke in our lifetime. 💙Stroke strikes every five minutes, 💙1000,000 people have strokes each year, 💙There are 1.3million stroke survivors in the UK. Highlighting the importance of finding strength through support, and how connecting with other stroke survivors is invaluable to people’s recovery. Stroke Association surveyed over 1,000 UK stroke survivors to mark #WorldStrokeDay, and found that a staggering 94% of stroke survivors who spoke with other stroke survivors said it helped them with their recovery – but in fact only a quarter (27%) had done so, 18% said it was the single most important part of their recovery, 60% said it helped them realise they weren’t alone, 58% said it gave them hope. 54% said talking to other survivors gave them emotional strength during their recovery.
